Okay so currently I have 30 credit hours going into my junior year. First two years I had to work full time plus overtime so took it slow. I am getting into the thick of my science classes this year and still working full time as Ihave been completely independent since I was 17.

Anyway I plan on applying August 2014 as I will have 90 hours completed and hopefully a solid MCAT. That would allow me to matriculate in Fall 2015. I am not going to have a BS mainly because I have to take a majority ofmy classes at a CC due to having to pay with no support at all financially from my parents. I am taking calc at a 4 year university (Indiana University) this fall and will take at least O-Chem there as well just to show I can handle it.I currently have a 3.8 and am so ridiculously determined to reach my goal. I know nothing is going to stop me, I am very excited to put the work in and getto pod school.

I spoke with Kent State which is my school of choice and they said I do not need a bachelors and could get in with 90 hours. Hypothetically speaking let'ssay I apply with 90 hours, a 3.6 cumGPA, ~3.7 sGPA, and a 23 MCAT (just a guess, obviously aiming for better🙄) What would my chances be of getting in to other schools?

I am still having to work close to ful ltime like I said earlier but I am hoping to be able to drop down to 20 hours a week next year so I can prepare forthe MCAT and keep on top of my grades. I think I should be able to pull a 4.0 this year even while working but next year I will have Ochem and think it could get a little harder to maintain that while working ~40 hours a week.

Sorry if I rambled a little bit!

I love this site. I always get such good advice and it is so inspirational to see all the success stories.

Best,

B

You are the one who's inspirational! It's amazing all the hard work you're putting in to get through school. I would say definitely work your bum off taking ochem with the lab at the 4yr university. Maybe even get a letter of rec from your ochem professor. Admissions may question why you took so many courses at community college, but you can explain that to them just as you did here. Those stats would probably land you interviews at most if not all the schools you apply to. Best of luck to you!

Do it! I sorta regret not applying last cycle.

Thanks man will do! So are you applying this cycle? If so good luck to you!

Thanks for the kind words mees. I live my life a certain way and set goals for myself. It is not a fact of IF i will reach them it's just a matter of WHEN. I live every detail of my life that way. I know that I want this more than anything and I would do anything to get there!

Thanks for the advice and good luck in your journey.. kick ass in every aspect of life.

I was thinking about starting a blog for other prospective pod students to follow. There isn't much out there. I think it would be good inspiration to others. "If I can do it so can you" sort of thing. Also think it would be cool to have a log of everything from pre-pod forward to look back on. What do you guys think?

I love it. Do it! Especially if it gives you something to do outside of work and school. Have you checked out this blog? It's the only one I really know. Someone gave a link to it a while ago, I like keeping up with her progress:

Ya I like keeping up with hers too! Its the only one that I know of.. I will definitely look at starting mine soon. If I can get a little free time to get it figured out. May wait until next semester. Busy, busy, busy right now.

Isn't she in Australia? I think I follow her on my tumblr...

Here's a student I found at DMU, she (?) isn't always posting about podiatry, but still:

Edit: jk, podgrl isn't in Australia, it's someone else I follow.

Hey B,

You are doing great. I am basically in the same boat as you. I have worked/studied full time 3 years. It can be pretty tough. I took my ochem 1 and 2 at a cc as well as bio 1 and 2. I have gone to part-time for my last year as I have to take some VERY difficult classes. The sad thing is that with work and ec activities my GPA is now a 3.4. I feel that if I wasn't working full time every year I may have had a slightly higher GPA. It's great that I haven't had to take out a single loan while at school, but my lower GPA is something I always hope I can get past.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I work 50+ hrs a week and have almost a 3.85 gpa. Trust me i'm no genius either. Keep working hard and staying positive; if I can do it so can you 🙂!

Good luck!

To answer your question.. If you get the gpa/mcat listed above and apply early i'm sure you will land interviews at any school.

way to go!!

Thank you.

My biggest advice to anyone having to deal with working and going to class is to really find something to motivate you and keep your flame burning strong. For me it was knowing that I was fighting everyday for a brighter, happier future.

I grew up in a very broken household. Lot's of abuse and constant fighting/yelling between my parents. On top of that I'm gay and had MANY experiences being bullied in school. It's also rough not having your parents' approval and feeling like a freak. I knew I had to escape the negativity but I didn't know how. All I had was my intellect and that's what I stuck too. I pushed through so much just to get the grades I have. Many times it was tears that fueled my success but hey, I know it will be all worth it in the end, where I can have a future filled with happiness and love.

Everyone deserves to be happy. 😍

Congrats! Very motivational.. Keep up the good work! You will do great things just keep your eyes on the prize and fight harder everyday.

Go get it!!

When returning to school I would take 2 night classes while working 50 hr week days. My motivation was to get the hell out of my job, and reach for something bigger then what people expected me to achieve.

I don't know if you will get in or not BUT it won't hurt to apply. Whats the worse, you don't get in, and you finish up a degree then apply? Even though I may never use my chemistry degree when complete, I will always have that accomplishment - not everyone has the guts to go for that.

I should be graduating with a 3.75gpa, with a family, and work. I'm no genius just a smart worker, and manage my time.
