I've been working as a Child Youth Worker for just under a year now. The psychiatrist at the agency that recommended me for my current job offered to write me a LOR, and I accepted his offer and thanked him.

Sadly, a few days ago he showed me a copy of the letter after he had sent it. It's about 6 sentences long split between 3 paragraphs. It says I have all these great character qualities, but it says nothing about my work at the agency, and gives no examples of how I demonstrate what he wrote about in the workplace, it doesn't mention my job duties at all.

I'm near freak-out right now. I dont' even know if it's worth submitting my application with this kind of a reference... I had assumed that the psychiatrist would have known what a good medical school reference letter must include.

I'm assuming that I also know what a good medical school reference letter looks like.

Thoughts guys?

rewrite it, send it back to him/her for addition/substraction, and ask to upload it into eras.

I understand the dilemma, but is one bad letter of rec really that much of a deal breaker?

It depends on what those 6 sentences said. Example -

-----

Wee1 has worked with me for the past year at ******. During that time I have gained a tremendous insight into Wee1's work ethic, motivations, personality and ability to relate to patients.

In my 20 years as a psychiatrist, I have worked with several hundred volunteers, many of whom have sought entrance to medical school. I would easily place Wee1 in the top 2-3 students I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

I have little doubt that Wee1 will continue to set the example for others to follow and will be a leader in our profession if given the opportunity. I give my highest recommendation to Wee1 and can assure that you will be as impressed with him/her in the future as I am.

------

Short, sweet and since it is actually only 6 sentences, is likely to be read in its entirety.
