I'm really mad at them right now and wondering if other schools have this same policy. I took Orgo I last summer and got a C, I am in Orgo II right now and am getting an A, so I was hoping to retake the first part this summer to increase my GPA. Well, I just called the school, and they don't let you retake classes that you received a C or better in. That is soo stupid! If I had just failed it I could have tried again, but because I got a C I'm stuck with it?!

I guess you're SOL.

Take biochem I and make an A ...

Well that sounds quite sucky... Keep complaining until they let you retake it.

I guess you never learned that complaining only works when you have something that can cost the other end millions ... 🙄

What school is this? Also, what about taking it at a community college over the summer?

Yeah, that's an unfortunate policy. However, you might be able to get around this by taking the equivalent class at another school. It should work out the same as a retake for AACOMAS purposes. Contact AACOM to be sure.

my school is like that too. you can only retake if it's a C- or lower.

Mind if i ask what schools these are?

OP, you can retake it anywhere you want. I am retaking gen chem2 at CC college now and contacted schools about it directly. They said it's not a problem and they accept retake as long as it is the equivalent course.
:luck:

😱 That is crazy! I don't understand that policy. Weird. They get more money from you that way, right? 😕 Anyway, that really stinks and I agree taking it another school would be a good idea.:luck:

It's understandable if the school has this policy. Always check first with the university.

... They also have a role, safety wise, to perform to society.

at my university, you can retake a C. however, you cannot retake a course once you are in or have completed the next subsequent course. which would be your case, since you are now in orgo II. only in extreme cases do they allow re-takes in that circumstance. see if that is also the case at your school. good luck :luck:

I did some online searching and theres one other university locally that I can take it at, but it's a very expensive private school, so I'm going to go in and have a chat with my premed advisor in person to see if he can't pull some strings for me. I'm not looking to replace the previous credit that I got, I could care less about what my GPA to them is, I just want to be able to replace the C on the AACOMAS gpa scale, not to mention that I just want to show the adcom that I can get an A in it.

I looked into the CC route, but the ones that I looked at only offer Intro to Organic Chem, so that wouldn't really equate.

😕 Safety wise? Explain.

I was kidding about the money, but I have never heard of such a policy. I don't understand why they would have it. If someone wants to retake a class for a higher grade, then I don't see anything wrong with that.

The reason you can't retake is because you passed the course. If they let you retake a C, they have to let you retake a B. Thats pretty much the logic behind it. I think that if you are willing to shell out the $ then you should be able to retake, but there are a ton of logistical problems that go along with that idea. You could bump people that need that class so you can have a slightly higher GPA. I would put more focus on doing well in other classes and using that as motivation to do better. A strong MCAT bio section will erase some questions about that organic grade anyway. I know it sucks, and I agree it sucks, but its college policy and its really pretty fair (most people are not trying to get into competitive medical school, most just want the degree and go into cubicle world). Best of luck.

In the end, one C won't kill your application. It might actually be a waste of time to re-take it, if your other grades are really high. On the other hand, you can take it elsewhere. It will average on both your AACOMAS or AMCAS, so you'll get a little boost.

Not sure if you meant this but....it'll average on AMCAS, but it will replace on AACOMAS 🙂

I think he was getting the ethical dilemma of allowing grade retakes anyway. I have retaken a couple of classes, but I tend to agree with the position that maybe retakes shouldnt be allowed unless you get an F. But since my school allows it, I took advantage of it.

I think it would only replace the grade if your school will officially put an "R" on your transcript, which in the OP's case will not happen. But I could be wrong about this.

Nah, AACOMAS will replace a grade as long as it's marked on the application as a re-take. So if you got a B in Orgo 1, then took it again and got an A, then the A counts.

My sentiments exactly. If the rest of your gpa (cumulative and sci) is good, I wouldn't bother retaking it (assuming it is above a C-, which medschools won't accept in pre-requisite areas).

That said, my alma mater has the same policy. It is *****ic, and the student associations are trying to change it. For the Canadians out there, DO NOT attend the University of Toronto if you can help it.

I wouldn't retake it. I got a C in the first half and an A in the second half. Also, I got to know my prof really well and he new that I was capable and had proven it in the next class so I asked him to write me a LOR. He said yes and that solved the problem. 🙂

No, med schools don't accept lower than a C, so certainly everything below that should be allowed to be retaken.:meanie:

do you put the R next to the original grade or the one you retook?

where I'm retaking my course it's 5 credits and the original course was 4 credits; does that matter?

I've gone to three different schools and all of them had that policy. At UT, the school I'm at know, even if you fail the class and retake it the best you'll get is an averaged grade, but it still won't replace it. I made a C+ in Orgo I myself and I still got in. You're better of, IMHO, just focusing on your classes now and classes in the future and bringing them up.
