I have done shadowing before and I have shadowed MANY different physicians in various medical fields, however, recently I found a new person to shadow within a field I have never shadowed in before.

After I landed the shadowing opportunity and before showing up to shadow, I researched the physician and found out SOOO many awesome things that literally made me nervous to show up and VERY nervous to even talk when I got there.

A few things I found out:
1. This physician was inducted as physician of the YEAR over all states in America
2. This physician has received MANY INTERNATIONAL awards for outstanding medical work
3. This physician serves on the Dean's Board of one of the schools i am CURRENTLY APPLYING TO!!
4. This physician is an officer of a Nationwide Medical Board
5. While sitting in this physician's office a news channel in Ireland called to schedule an interview
6. A handful of nationally known news channels have come down to interview this physician and staff and do a "day in the life of"
7. the physician partner just came from Africa and was a major person there re: healthcare and he let me spend almost half the day with him too..
8. this physician is a preceptor for several medical schools

OMG.. BEST SHADOWING EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!! They allowed me hands on experience and encouraged me to ask questions. The entire staff was awesome and the patients were even more awesome by letting me experience their visit with them.
I spent the ENTIRED day with this physician and her partner starting at 5am and I left at 6pm (both clinic and hospital) but they were STILL going! They had to go BACK to the hospital because they had new admits and asked if I wanted to come.. but silly me.. i wore heels (even though they were small they wore my feet owwt.. They told me next time do not wear heels lol ))

So excited to go back tomorrow!!

Just wanted to share with all my SDNers and hope your future shadow experiences (in med school and pre-med school) will be as good as this one was.

I'm glad you've found a good shadowing opportunity, that sounds like a lot of fun. But this thread gives us the opportunity to ask another question:

What are some possible motivations for this post?

1. Image Crafting?
2. Narcissism?
3. Attention Craving?
4. Jealousy Inducing?
5. Loneliness?

None of the above. as mentioned in the post "Just wanted to share with all my SDNers and hope your future shadow experiences (in med school and pre-med school) will be as good as this one was."

Bluelabel.. can I ask YOU one question? What was the point of YOUR post?
1. Jealousy?
2. Attention Craving?
3. Lonliness?
4. Unhappy with yourself?
5. Superiority complex in a need to ATTEMPT to bring others down?

Why has SDN become so much of a NEGATIVE place??? It used to be full of people that encouraged others and offered positive advice to others... It seems most posts now get DERAILED and go into never land and at the end either gets closed or is talking about sex or something else stupid..

None of the above. as mentioned in the post "Just wanted to share with all my SDNers and hope your future shadow experiences (in med school and pre-med school) will be as good as this one was."

Interesting, sounds like a combination of narcissism (thousands of people who don't know you NEED to know what is going on in your life right now) and jealousy inducing (my shadowing experiences are TOTALLY AWESOME!). Nothing about your post was either entertaining or useful to others so it was clearly done for some self-serving reason.

Understand that when you feel the need to start a brand new thread wholly devoted to how great your life is, you are opening the door for others to speculate as to why you might have done so. That's all I was pointing out, there's no need to be so defensive.

If nothing was entertaining or useful, why even bother responding? Why not ignore it. Obviously you found something interesting or entertaining that you just HAD to chime in and respond with negative thoughts and derail.

Obviously you are narcissistic if you think so highly of yourself as an authority of knowing what EVERY SINGLE PERSON on SDN will think of this post that you can speak for them in saying that it wasnt useful to others or done for self-serving reasons and absolutely KNOWING that MY LIFE is great.. how would you know that?

Its okay that you ARE CLEARLY jealous in the fact that you are mentioning jealousy and taking time to write on this post, respond to the post and take time out of YOUR day to address a POST and attempt to degrade a person of whom you know NOTHING about.

There is no need for the OP to be defensive, but likewise there is no need for you to be offensive. If you don't like her post, then ignore it like I was going to do. There's no need to bring someone down- this forum is supposed to resemble some type of community.

It's just that I'm always a little puzzled by people who e-brag to strangers and I was hoping to better understand. There's no need to be upset.

Ignore posts that aggravate you. You'll look back on these arguments and feel silly.

It's just that I'm always a little puzzled by people who e-brag to strangers and I was hoping to better understand. There's no need to be upset.

I understand you may be PUZZLED but considering the fact this is a medical forum STUDENT DOCTOR NETWORK.. this forum is used to
1. HELP others get to where they want to be professionally
2. Encourage others in their daily quest to obtain their long-term goals
3. Provide helpful insight to others
4. Learn about others experiences on their way to achieving their goals in hopes to be able to deal with similar situations that may arise in their own quest to becoming the medical professional they seek
5. provide a network of people they can talk to and or vent to regarding these quests because of maybe not having someone in their physical and immediate life that understands what they are going through or may not care

I am NOT a bragger and I don't care if someone else is a bragger.. I will NEVER degrade a person or attempt to if they do brag. I am an encourager and an overall positive person. Although I cant stop someone from TRYING to bring me down I absolutely refuse to allow ANYONE to accomplish that goal.

In the future for your OWN sanity, i suggest (take it or leave it) you ignore posts that "puzzle" you. If you must respond, please dont be so aggressive and negative. Thanks

Ignore posts that aggravate you. You'll look back on these arguments and feel silly.

Actually I disagree. If as a community we discourage aggravating behavior, we can promote an environment less dominated by attention-seekers. Why not try to make the boards a better place?

Thank you for your concern, but it's no skin off my nose. I do hope this experience opened your eyes a little.

Do you call the above aggravating? telling someone they are Narcissistic, Attention Craving, Jealous, Image Crafting and Lonely? Thats making the board a "BETTER PLACE"??

Clearly you did find it aggravating, but maybe it gave you a little perspective. Yes, I would consider a forum where people think twice before posting self-serving threads a better place.

You're welcome to the last word, if you want it.

There's misjudgment on both sides. Yes, we want to be encouraging and supportive, but your original post almost innately warrants the opposite effect.

Half of your post was simply listing the accolades of the physician you got to shadow, however you never said how you got this shadowing gig (which would be helpful to other pre-meds) or gave any real insight into how the shadowing went. It really comes across as bragging.

You may want to take a look at your signature.

"LAW 4 - Always Say Less Than Necessary - the more you say, the more common you appear."

"LAW 46 Never Appear Too Perfect"

........ however you never said how you got this shadowing gig (which would be helpful to other pre-meds) or gave any real insight into how the shadowing went.....

Look up physicians online in your area and cold-call to find a physician to shadow .. which is what i did.

I said the shadowing was great in the original post.

PS I LOVE my signature! Thank you for noticing it 😍

Very cool, glad you had a fun experience. What field does she work in?

Just wanted to share with all my SDNers and hope your future shadow experiences (in med school and pre-med school) will be as good as this one was.

I for one am happy you had a great shadowing experience 🙂 Honestly, most shadowing experiences are not that amazing at least that was the case for me and my friends. However, you can pay it forward by allowing others in your area to PM you for recommendations on where and how they too can shadow to experience such "awesomeness" (I couldn't think of another word im tired lol). I'm just making a suggestion of how you can turn your experience to a more positive one but you don’t have to though.

Btw, you don’t have to explain yourself to a poster who seems to spend most his/her time on here arguing with people for the hell of it. There are tons of great people on here don’t let one bad apple ruin this valuable resource that is SDN for you. Good luck

Stopped reading at "ENTIRED" lol

What kind of shadowing experience lets you do hands on work anyway? Might want to be careful with that one, op.

But you were so close to the end! Missed the thrilling conclusion.

Trying to live up to my verbal score by half assing it. Going back to the passage i did miss the shocking conclusion: more caps and blither.

Don't some schools throw out your app if you did any medical work you weren't actually trained to do? ie. Michigan

I highly doubt OP did any "medical work." She probably got to hold something or used a stethoscope or something.

+1

I understand how BlueLabels post might be seen as offensive to some, but in reality its just a blunt way of asking " what is the point of this thread?"

At face value, it seems as a thread created by a pre-med who is excited about a shadowing experience... which is fine. HOWEVER, the fact that you felt the need to brag about this physician who is bordering on celebrity status does come off a bit as bragging or narcissistic.

The fact that you felt the need to personally attack BlueLabel on other threads besides this one also comes off a bit as immature, especially when you consider the fact that you yourself mentioned that SDN is supposed to be a 'professional' community that provides 'insight', not puts others down by moving to other threads and saying 'cool story bro' ( refer to Texas A&M thread).

Damn, why do you live in Alabama?! Send some of that awesomeness my way

Very cool, glad you had a fun experience. What field does she work in?

Yes it was 🙂 The Physician is in Family Medicine

.... However, you can pay it forward by allowing others in your area to PM you for recommendations on where and how they too can shadow to experience such "awesomeness" (I couldn't think of another word im tired lol). ....
haha Yes, it was an awesome experience 🙂 I just looked online for physicians and cold called.

Stopped reading at "ENTIRED" lol

What kind of shadowing experience lets you do hands on work anyway? ......
The word should be ENTIRE, thank you for pointing that out. Often on an informal message board like this I DO NOT feel its necessary to go back and PROOFREAD my posts.. This physician is responsible for students in 2 other medical schools and they come do their rotations there. This physician loves to involve the student so they can see what is actually going on.

Trying to live up to my verbal score by half assing it. Going back to the passage i did miss the shocking conclusion: more caps and blither.
If you are referring to my original post, I hardly think I am speaking nonsense, but yes, it was a longer post. However, I was excited to share with my SDN "FAMILY" << more caps for you. 🙂

Don't some schools throw out your app if you did any medical work you weren't actually trained to do? ie. Michigan
I'm not an authority figure on if schools will throw out your app or not. Sorry. 🙁

I highly doubt OP did any "medical work." She probably got to hold something or used a stethoscope or something.

You are correct Ismet. I was able to examine the ear, nose, throat. I was able to listen to heart murmurs, stomach gurgling (or non gurgling), listen to the patient breathing (there was some serious issues with a couple of patients and they wanted me to know why so they told me to listen). I was also able to examine muscular issues after they already did so to help me understand why they were saying xyz to the patient..

... ...The fact that you felt the need to personally attack BlueLabel on other threads besides this one also comes off a bit as immature ........by moving to other threads and saying 'cool story bro' ( refer to Texas A&M thread).

Correction GandalfTheWhite.. I did not say "Cool Story Bro" i said "Cool Story" and ... guess what.. its true... IT WAS a cool story.... so why is that being seen as "Personally Attacking" again??

OP asks for help -

"I have all A's so far this semester except in my Anatomy & Physiology class. I underestimated the first exam and got a 76/100 in it. There is still another 100 pt exam and a 200 pt final for a total of 400 pts.

How hard will the class become? Do you think I can pull off an A, given proper study? "

PinknGreenMD responds by telling OP how easy it was for her to get an A -

"Honestly i took Anatomy and Physiology I & II and these were my FAVORITE classes ... I got an A in both ... but I loved learning about the body, its components how they respond of other parts and organs, etc.. It was really exciting. I loved the dissections. getting up close to all the organs and really seeing how they operate .. getting a hands on feel to what i study in the books ... the books were great too.

Me and my group would always be the last to leave the lab because we were enjoying it so much and we were always the first to finish all the quizzes and tests..

Just study the material against the outline your teacher gives you and you will be fine."

Giving some recaps of your experience is great and all. It helps motivate others to find similar experiences. But there is a fine line between sharing and bragging

It seems like there's a pattern of behavior here. But based on the responses, it's become clear that OP genuinely doesn't realize how she comes off. And that's okay, we can only hope to improve ourselves as we go through life, so I'm glad I took the time to point it out to her. I think this is actually a positive on the whole.

That said, I do want to apologize to the OP for being excessively blunt. Although I stand by my remarks, I could have phrased them in softer language. I definitely would have done so had I realized that you were oblivious to how you came across, and not being intentionally braggy.

What are the choices?

A. Humble brag
B. Dear Diary...
C. Trolling
D. Stick it to the man
E. All of the above
F. Two of the above

But really, OP, what did you think was going to happen to this thread? What did you honestly expect people to say? People on this forum generally don't respond well to threads about how freaking awesome their lives are and you've been around long enough to know that.

Great experience, but try not to share with the class next time unless there's a moral other than "look at me and how awesome I am!"

So... What was the point of this thread again?

To encourage others to get really get involved in shadowing and make a good impression and research the person you are shadowing because you never know what rank or pull that person may have 🙂

Doctor Strange: you are rehashing things that have already been addressed above. Please see previous posts. Thanks for being HELPFUL and sticking with the ENCOURAGING environment and not BASHING others or TRYING to discourage others ... 🙂 PS never said I was awesome... but seems you think I am since you said it and for that.. THANKS 😍
Love ya 😉

You never said that anywhere in the original post. Good ideas, yes, but nothing you posted. This whole thread is "MY Shadowing Experience," meaning it's about you.

This thread should probably be closed anyway since it was posted in another subforum also.

This is an interesting thread but knowing OP well from the previous exchange, I wasn't surprised by the responses. 😉

Lolwut. A premed school? That's as humorous (and ironic) as that Premed Day someone else posted. But yes, this thread is basically your typical premed bragging how awesome medicine is by a mere shadowing experience. There is nothing to see here or to rage about so let's carry on with the usual routine.

Clearly that was not the primary reason you made that post. You were making yourself look good at the same time.

Chillbo Baggins: Thank you so much for thinking that this post "made me look good" I had no idea 🙂 and you are EXACTLY right the title is MY shadowing experience.. so why would there be ANY conflict in the beginning to resolve? You literally answered all your own questions and snarky remarks within your own post. Again, why are you even responding if you dont agree with the post. why not ignore it if you are not going to contribute ANYTHING positive towards it?? Thanks 🙂 😍

This is an interesting thread but knowing OP well from the previous exchange, I wasn't surprised by the responses. 😉

Lolwut. .

Oh yea, i wondered when you would rear your little head. This comes from a person that STALKED me on SDN for almost a month and responded to EVERY SINGLE THREAD I ever posted. Glad to see you are back ...

I'm trying to help you avoid looking like a fool, and I'm failing.

There was no point in anyone responding with such negativity in the first place. This board is supposed to help others and inspire others, not degrade others and put others down. We are all working towards the same goal of becoming a healthcare professional in whatever field we choose.

There is no need to consistently take a positive thread and try to misconstrue it to something totally different. If someone reads a thread and takes away from it that the other person is "bragging" that only means that person is insecure.

I am not responsible for holding someones hand and helping them be less insecure, thats what their mother is for. I am here as a peer to share my stories, read your stories and learn to make myself a better applicant based on others experiences.

If you are here to just deter other away from posting (which is what you all do every single time you HARASS people that posts things) then you all are MISERABLE MISERABLE people that need to take a step back and look in the "pretty" mirror and re-evaluate YOURSELF instead of trying to call out others.

That is NOT your job. YOU are NOT hired to do that. You are not being PAID to HARASS others. If you dont like a post, you dont HAVE to respond. Nobody can force you to not respond but if you do, you should, as a human being, want to lift up and encourage others instead of putting them down.

Hopefully all of you insecure little ones are not like this in real life..This is ONLY a message board for pete's sake. read a bible or SOMETHING to relieve stress if you are that upset about it.
