My first semester of college was rough. I was a BME major but after some soul searching I realized that becoming a doctor is my goal in life so I switched from being a BME to a Biology major. However due to several personal reasons I ended up getting an F in my Precalculus class and getting a C in chemistry 1. My current GPA is a 1.98. During my winter break I had went through an epiphany and now am studying my butt off. I am currently taking Precalculus again and doing alot better than I did the first time. I am also planning on retaking chemistry in the summer which I know I will get an A in. So my question is what will happen when I apply to medical school ?I know by retaking these classes the grade will get replace ( which will boost my GPA to a 3.8) but both grades will show on the transcript when I apply. So how will having a F and a C on my transcript but retaking those classes and getting an A in them effect my chances for medical school? thank you. I want to apply to an MD program not a DO program just for clarification.

Just go get A's from now on (sprinkled with a few, B's) and you should be fine for MD and obviously, DO.

Med schools realize a really poor 1st semester, followed up by a tremendous upswing is just a typical freshman. Oh, and don't get a DUI, IA, etc.

MD schools do not replace grades. Your re-takes will be averaged into the total gpa. As long as you have gpa's (and an overall application) consistent with success, you will be a good candidate. Trend is also important.

It'll be okay if you figure out how to college.

I have a WF, an F, a couple Cs, and a few Bs. Still managed a 3.5/3.8.

However due to several personal reasons

Make sure these are taken care of. While having the grades will get you through the doors of med school, life skills are the ones that keep you in.

While having confidence is often a good thing, especially when trying to make a drastic change such as going from a 1.98 to the 3.8 that you are aiming after, don't count your eggs before they hatch. Be optimistic, but be diligent and methodical at the same time.
