Im sure everyone is gonna want some feedback and I am no exception. My god I held that OAT letter in my hands for like a half hour before I had the nerve to open it. I am at the lower end of this app pool.

I think you've got nothing to worry about. That's an exceptional OAT score, and a decent GPA. How is your experience and where are u applying?

I just did an internship with my optometrist. But yeah, I applied to SCCO, Berk,
NOVA, Illinois, SUNY and New England. Still playing the waiting game too.

Not sure about Berkley, borderline for SCCO, but you've got an excellent chance for ICO and New England. Good job! At the end, you'll have the same degree no matter where you go.

For SUNY, it depends on which undergrad school you are attending/attended, but you got a good chance. For SCCO, I think you'll get in with 380 and 3.0 GPA...far from borderline (especially if you applied early). Berkeley might be a challenge. ICO and NECO, no problem.

I will just second what everyone says. With your great OAT scores (congrats!), you will definitely be interviewed at least at SCCO, ICO, SUNY, Newenco, and NOVA. I was interviewed at the first four schools with just a slightly higher GPA (3.2) and my OAT scores were not nearly as high (Average 320-330).

If your interview goes well, I think you have a good chance at being accepted in those schools.

For Berkeley, I will say that you have a chance of making the interview round if you have a lot of volunteer experience, maybe research experience, come from a well known university, or have increased your GPA from higher division courses. I didn't do well during my first year at undergraduate when I was taking my science courses (I was a biological sciences major), but then I received pretty much all A's for my higher division courses and labs (micrbio, physio, etc.) which helped a lot in boosting my GPA but not to the point of 3.5. If you are considering Berkeley, I would say that you should just apply and see what happens. I tell this story often, but I almost did not apply to Berkeley because I thought I had no chance of getting accepted but here I am now. 🙂

Needed to add this: You will greatly improve your chances in getting into any of those schools if you apply EARLY. Berkeley is the exception because it does not really do rolling admissions.

Hey Stompy, how do you know SUNY looks at what undergrad. school you went too? Like say if someone from Canada is from Waterloo is that good or bad? I'm just saying Waterlo since its the only school with an Opt. in Canada. (not including Quebec)

The director of admissions at SUNY openly says that they consider you undergraduate school, most of them also have this printed somewhere on the paper application itself or online. SUNY considers all applicant equal regardless of origin, however attending a Canadian school (such as Waterloo, or just about any other) will be of benefit since they are held in high regard. Options for Canadian Schools pretty much stop at Waterloo -- unless you speak french 😉

There have been plans for another in the past... UBC and Dalhousie I think. However, they all lacked gov't support. On the bright side. UW is increasing enrollment to 90 over the next few years, and should be admitting 70 for 2005. Dalhousie actually has a program that some of you may be interested in: a Masters of Clinical Science in Orthoptics. Now many of you are probably wondering what the hell an orthoptist is? From my limited understanding it is a technician who can do the refraction with out checking for pathology and is also trained in areas such as vision therapy. Most are employed in large vision clinics (ie. Ivey Eye Institute, London, ON) under optometrist and opthamologists. More info can be found on the Dalhousie website. Similar programs are also offered as diplomas and certificates are a number of teaching hospitals throughout the country.

That's because when Dr. Johnston came to our school, he said a 3.0 GPA would be considered as competitive as someone who has a 3.5 GPA in a random school...He either said that or it was implied.
