Ok I applied to NYU thinking it's just a plan B since every pre-dent had told me negative things about the school (all rumors) but after seeing the school I was puzzled because the school is absolutely gorgeous. The sad part is NYU itself does not try to portray their positive image because they believe only the serious applicants should commit to it. Anyway I was accepted elsewhere but I decided to go to NYU because it's fantastic. If you want details about all the positives just ask me and I will post them. The point of this story is do not listen to pre-dents. They are stupid. I should know because I am one of them. I almost turned a school simply based on rumors. Go to the school and then make up your mind about it. There is no such a thing as a bad or good school but rather a good or bad fit for you. For example if you're a hilly billy from the south you probably will not find NYU a good fit.

JB, you made it in? There really isn't that much trash talk about NYU or anything, the general outlook on it was that it's really expensive, that's all.

No doubt, NYU is stunning and has amazing facilities. It makes the other schools I got into look like crap (in terms of asthetics). If you can handle REALLY big school mentality, more power to you. General outlook is price (doesn't matter in long run) and you have to compete with 360 students (this is the problem) for chairs.

i really think NYU is a great school.... i thought this before getting in too.

there are 2 cons to NYU:
1. the cost of attendance
2. large class --> although this isn't really much of a con

the school is on the cutting edge technologically, and the facilities are top of the line. in addition, there are soo many resources to take advantage of if you're a go-getter...

with that said, if i got into a much cheaper school tomorrow i would not go to NYU b/c graduating with as little debt as possible is my top priority. this decision would have nothing to do with NYU as a school though.

jb!🙂

I have heard NYU's reputation has been turning around the past couple of years. They have a lot of money, so I would guess pretty good facilities. When the public hears NYU, it leaves a good impression. People know it is overall a good institution and everyone nearly has heard of it. If Giuliani ever became president, an NYU alumni (Law school) will be running the country. On top of all this New York University sounds good.

one word: Bertolami 👍👍👍

Seems as if NYU has risen above its former reputation, and i'm glad to hear it. now lets see if USC can follow in NYU's footsteps...

i think NYU has been on the upswing long before Bertolami was announced as new dean. don't get me wrong, Bertolami will definitely help but he's not the sole reason.

jb!🙂

I have heard almost every rumor there is to hear about NYU. But I always took them with a grain of salt until I interviewed at the school myself and spoke to the students. My expectations were totally exceeded once I was able to personally experience all that the school has to offer. I think with the addition of the new dean the school is only going to get better and better. Congradulations to everyone that was accepted. See you in August!!

i think you misunderstood me, i didn't mean bertolami is the only reason nyu has been on the upswing, but rather that his appointment as dean is an indication of the direction that NYU has been taking in order to improve its program

either way, go NYU 👍

my fiance was accepted to nyu and she absolutely loved her interview experience there. like the original poster said, the school is gorgeous.

good reminder to take everything you hear on the forums with a grain of salt

Ok this whole thread is rediculous and the most rediculous statement was made by the OP. Denticized.....you talk about how everyone here is stupid because they are predents and they can't judge NYU until they try it out. Well.....aren't you a predent too? You haven't tried it out yet so I don't know how you are trying to convince people to go there based upon the fact that other people who haven't gone there either say bad things about it. My word is just as good as yours. Now, if you come back to SDN and write about how amazing NYU is one year from now, your arguement would hold more weight. I am not trying to attack you. Based upon my own experiences with NYU and the students that I spoke with there, I have plenty of bad things to say about the school (more than the avg school I interviewed at). I spent a day there just like you have and I know plenty of people there and currently have 2 relatives in the dental school there. All I can say to future predents is......get all the info you can from people who say both good things and bad things about a school. Do not base your decisions only on the word of one predent over another. Go there, interview and SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS THERE. Do not ask the students giving you the tours and speeches how the school is......most of them are doing the tours because they have incentive to do so. Do what I did. Wander a few feet from the tour and ask some students who are walking around or in the clinic what they think of the school and how it compares to other schools where their friends are at. I would be shocked if the majority don't tell you to go to another school (as they told me to do and my friends who asked other dental students there outside of the tour group). Like I mentioned in other posts, don't despair if it is the only school you got into, be happy you got in somewhere and make the very best of it. But if you have a choice, do research and choose wisely.

Ething, it's you again. While it is apparent you have a disdain for NYU, it is now apparent you can't spell the words ridiculous and argument, or formulate grammatically correct sentences. Thus, I'm having a tough time taking you seriously, but I digress.

If you are accusing Denticized about his/her positive opinion on NYU as being 'rediculous' due to the fact that he/she hasn't attended the school yet, then isn't what you just posted of lesser value and more 'rediculous' due to the fact that 1. You're not even going to attend that school, 2. Have yet in any of your posts regarding NYU show proof or concrete examples of how NYU doesn't turn your crank. I'm still dying to know this list of 'plenty of bad things to say' about NYUCD. How do you know for certain that Denticized didn't talk to more students or faculty during his/her interview/tour?

If NYUCD is such a school that you feebly think it is, then why did you even bother applying? Shouldn't the 'warnings' of your two relatives be enough for you to not waste your time and money applying to this institution? I find this somewhat ironic and can only suspect that your brain is somewhere in the mid 90's or you flat out got rejected.

Now, I'm not saying I'm in favor of this thread as I don't believe it should be necessary to rehash this whole issue of NYU as a safety school and the likes. In fact, it has been a while since any predent has brought up this issue. I understand how Denticized is meaning well by creating this thread; however, in doing so, he/she has opened up the rumors that us predents have tried to close. Just leave it to be. Ething, be happy you're headed to UPenn and leave the bitterness out of your posts.

Ething didn't bring up the safety school stuff. Like any other school it has its pros and cons. I know some of you are damn proud of choosing NYU, and I don't blame any of you guys. Yes, the new dean will bring more $$$ to the school, no doubt; but there will be things that will always hold true at NYU like cutting edge technology at the expense of crazy tuition and 360 people from 2nd year on. Even in clinic, you ONLY have to compete with 180 people (from 360) and you have to rotate between day and afternoon blocks, since there's no way they can fit 360 people in there. Columbia was chaotic already with 75 students running around.

Anyway, I thought it was funny they got one of the TOP NYU students (class prez I believe) to lead our tour during the time I was there. Of course they're gonna be biased if they're the student president (Ething does have a point). Every school will want to suck up the best applicants, even NYU.

couldn't agree more. i was impressed when i was there, and imo, it is a good program with several opportunities, especially if you would like to go into something like cosmetic dentistry. impressive faculty as well. you just ahve to see whether you'd like the large class size or not. it's for some people and not for others

It's pretty intuitive that a school will put on their best face and choose the best person to lead the tour. That's a point that's not even worth mentioning.

I have no problems admitting that the living expenses and class size may be a turn off for a lot of students, but Ething has made NYUCD look like it should be the last dental school to choose from. With quotes like:

"NYU used to be a decent place to go to dental school but it is not anymore. They are drastically trying to change this fact but they are not quite there yet. It still has a pretty crappy reputation despite what a few SDNers keep trying to say about it."

"ANYONE WHO HAD AN INTERVIEW THERE AND ACTUALLY SPOKE TO 5 OR 10 STUDENTS AT RANDOM (NOT 1 OR 2 WHO WERE ASSIGNED TO GIVE THE TOUR) WILL TELL YOU IT IS TERRIBLE AND THAT YOU SHOULD GO SOMEWHERE ELSE."

...with those quotes, I find it difficult to take such a person seriously.

Oh how interesting...now not only do we have interprofession bashing and competition, we also now apparently have intraprofessional bashing and competition as well. If people aren't comparing MD to DDS, they are comparing Harvard Dental to NYU Dental. When will it stop?

Sorry for that...spelling and grammar was never my thing, I will give you that. If I actually cared enough I would have done spell check. I am just voicing my opinion on the topic, that is all. Like I said, I am not trying to attack anyone or to be mean. I try to be open and honest with everyone and that is what I am attempting to do here. I respect your opinion and everyone else who is pro NYU. I did not get rejected from NYU. I have my acceptance letter if you would like to see it. You are right, I do not have proof on paper to back up my opinion.....and neither do you. I don't care if anyone here listens to my opinion about the school, all I am saying is that they should talk to students who are not involved in the tour while they are there. They should randomly go to 5-10 students and ask them what they think about the school. PLEASE don't take my word for it, go do the research for yourself (please don't attack what I just said by saying something along the lines of "Ething thinks research is asking people their opinion. He doesn't even know what research is! How did he get into dental school in the first place?.......Grow up). People.....just talk to students there. If you want me to make a "list" for you, as mymouthsmells wants me to do, just ask. Or go read some other threads about NYU for ideas and questions to ask the students while you are there.
