Hello

I have been reading on this site for a month or so and the more I read it the more it helps me solidify that I want to be in the medical career.

But I was wondering what advice some of you would give in my situation.

Mainly - I graduated high school with a 2.9GPA (senior year was a 3.8 and easily the hardest of the years). I have bounced degrees from Architecture to Econ to Physics to Journalism etc.

All I have to show for it is an Associates in Arts and a few Fs from a Big State university. My total GPA is a 2.9 as well. My only science class that I stuck with as chemisry back in 99 and I believe I got a B in it.

I am looking at degrees to go back and finish up. What would you guys recommend doing? I am strong in science classes and I loved physics. I just never knew what I could use with those degrees. I looked into business and actually started a business with one of my old bosses for one year before I left to pursue school again.

Well, after all this "soul searching" I think I have finally found something that I will enjoy. Without getting too personal of reasons on here I am finding it to be a very solid fit. The challenge of getting through it all is attractive enough but being able to help out someone in need is tops. Now mix in the greatest girl in the world supporting me 100% (and she is actually looking into med school as well).

This is kind of rambled together and sorry if it was hard to read - just typing thoughts.

I am finally saying hello and hopefully be able to share my future successes with you all.

But to the basics - as of now I have a 2.9GPA and an AA froma CC. What should I major in? I already was accepted to a Nursing school that I declined but seeing what they get paid I am probably going to use that as my plan B if all else fails. I really want to get into either Emergency or Anesthesiology.

Thanks for reading.

The highlighted parts kind of bring up major red flags in my mind. Please make sure that, after oscillating between so many other careers, your urge to go to medical school is not just a whim brought about by an attractive salary and similar interests from your girlfriend or due to the infectious enthusiasm of other pre-meds & medical students on this site. For now, some more active 'soul searching' might be the next best step.

You never mentioned it, but you should get some shadowing experience and other volunteer work under your belt (if you haven't already) to give you a taste of what doctors do on a daily basis. Also try to take a couple of science classes to see if they still appeal to you and if you can do well in them (ie: As), especially since the only class you have taken was general chemistry quite a number of years ago.

If medicine is still the only thing in the world you can imagine yourself doing, after accomplishing the above, then try to formulate a plan to enroll in and finish the rest of the pre-reqs. Remember that medical school is no cakewalk and involves an extremely rigorous 4 years of study followed by years of residency working 80 hours/week. So just make sure that it's really worth it to you. 🙂
