I'm really lacking motivation this time of year, not just to do academic work, but for everything in life. 🙁 This thread (the idea came from CC) will be where I share what I'm up to, and how my day went by - sort of like a diary.

I urge you guys to also post here letting everyone know what your goals for the summer (and for an extensive part of the year besides summer) are, and together, we can have success. :highfive: I hope this thread will motivate you as much as I know it will motivate me. 🙂 So here goes:

Summer goals:

Academic:

1) Finish Spanish 2 on FLVS (I need to finish this by Wednesday of next week.)
2) Study SAT 2 Math, Lit. (Need to be able to get 750 + on both by the end of summer)
3) Study for the SAT (Really need to focus on Math since that's my weakest point)
4) Memorize Barron's 3500 word list (Just finished circling and counting the words I know – Now, I need to memorize about 2095 words)
5) Learn Arabic (This is going to be so damn difficult, but I'm up for the challenge)
6) Shadow a physician (Looking at an orthopedic sports medicine clinic as of right now)
7) Have read at least 12 books by the end of summer
8) Volunteer at a local hospital (I don't know how the hell I'm going to get teacher recommendations...I think I'll need to volunteer somewhere else 🙁 )
9) Get better at math (as a whole)
10) Improve my writing skills (Start a blog?)

Personal:

1) Workout (I have to get ripped by the end of summer. I'm currently 5'7, 116 pounds, athletic build)
2) Play basketball in the park almost everyday
3) I need to change my attitude about life. (1. Stop being pessimistic at times. 2. Try my best in everything I do, and then just hope for the best.)

You're from College Confidential too, me too, I use the same name.

My goals are:

Academic:

- Study SAT
- Study AP Chemistry material
- Review Algebra II for Pre-Calculus
- Study for SAT Subject Tests for Biology M, Chemistry and Math I

Personal:

- Veterinary Internship
- Driver's ED
- Attempt to meet new people.

Academic

1) Finish all of my college placement crap by July 7th.
2) Learn how to code (computer programming, not consciously stopping my heart)
3) Brush up on spanish
4) (Not really academic, but kinda) Be more patient when I draw. I'm great at it, but it takes so damn long to do.

Personal

1) Workout: 6'2 160lbs (just maxed 215 bench, want to hit 235 by school and start squatting and deadlifting more)
2) Stop going to bed at 4 am and waking up at 2pm

That's it.

DrOtho:

Your list looks difficult, but doable. Just try to do at least 2 from your academic list everyday and you should be golden (except for the Arabic one- that should be daily. and shadowing, that doesn't need to be done very often, especially since you won't be able to sit in on any surgeries).

On working out:

I started in March and didn't see any real progress until May. Then weight went up like crazy. I added ~100 lbs to my bench (probably a good 45% of that was technique) in only a month. Remember, diet is HUUGE when working out. I recommend talking to someone who knows what they're doing before committing.

Anyways, good luck this summer.

Edit: Stay away from CC. It's full of arrogant narcissistic misinformed kids and they're equally misinformed parents who live vicariously through them.

I'm on vacation right now. I was just going to lurk until I got back, but hearing CC mentioned was enough of a draw.

Excellent advice, INS.

Academic:
1.) I'd love to pull a 4.0 for my freshman year.
2.) Look in my college library to see if I can strengthen my Spanish skills.

Personal:

1.) I'm overweight, there's just no two ways around it. (5'9, 230 lbs). I need to get down to as low of a weight as possible, but my doctor told me I could never get under 150 lbs. To do this, I intend to start swimming.
2.) Shadow ALL the doctors! Because, in all seriousness, I'm one of those people that try all the classes in an RPG. I'm entirely too fickle for my own good.

Best of luck to everyone!

@Fantasy, My username for CC was WorldsBestBaller - you may remember me. 🙂 I' ve beeen banned... 🙁

@INS, I should even stay away from the "High School Life" subforum of CC?

Lol, yea. CC is a bunch of BS anyways. The mods are so protective (as is CC in general) that it get's annoying after a while. I just wish HSDN would be as active as CC is... Though I will miss a lot of the CC members. You should invite them all to come to HSDN...more people will make it more active. 🙂

Oh, CC... my sanctuary, my asylum!

🙂

As far as the plans for the summer go:
1) Since I'm starting college during summer, complete my 2 classes with A's -- the ultimate goal; and even if I don't reach the other ones, but reach this one, I will be happy.
2) Read "The Great Gatsby" -- Never read it. Such a shame.
3) Learn more about meditation. They say that college students who regularly meditate tend to do better academically.

By the way, is anyone here into meditation or yoga?

@INS, I should even stay away from the "High School Life" subforum of CC?

Stay away from all of it. :scared: :barf:

My current short term goal is to get all of my grad thank you notes done... my party was a month ago, and I've gotten 1.5 thank you notes written. 🙄 I'm also determined to get my flying lead changes down in riding, which is where you signal the horse to change its leading leg at the canter.

Okay, everyone, it' time to update my progress.

Academics:

1) Finish Spanish 2 on FLVS (I need to finish this by Wednesday of next week.) ------------------> Complete failure (I'm getting a new teacher for some reason, so I can't turn in any work until I get a new teacher...)

2) Study SAT 2 Math, Lit. (Need to be able to get 750 + on both by the end of summer) --------> I've really been hitting hard on SAT Lit. I'm currently memorizing a bunch of terms from a Barron's SAT Lit. book, and it seems like a huge overkill to me, but whatever. I bought the book, and now I have to finish it. I'm sort of doing the Math 2, but not really. I got to really pick it up there too.

3) Study for the SAT (Really need to focus on Math since that's my weakest point) --------------> Haven't even looked at the SAT book yet...

4) Memorize Barron's 3500 word list (Just finished circling and counting the words I know – Now, I need to memorize about 2095 words) --> I've started to memorize, but, again, I really need to go faster.

5) Learn Arabic (This is going to be so damn difficult, but I'm up for the challenge) ----------------> Memorizing vocabulary every day.

6) Shadow a physician (Looking at an orthopedic sports medicine clinic as of right now) -------> Haven't even called anyone yet (my doctor is too far from my house, so I can't do it there)

7) Have read at least 12 books by the end of summer ----------------------------------------------------------> I'm not doing this...I have much more important stuff to do than read some damn books...lol

8) Volunteer at a local hospital (I don't know how the hell I'm going to get teacher recommendations...I think I'll need to volunteer somewhere else )

9) Get better at math (as a whole) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Not there yet, but slowly, someday, I'll get there, hopefully x)

10) Improve my writing skills (Start a blog?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------> I've started reading The Element of Style.

Personal:

1) Workout (I have to get ripped by the end of summer. I'm currently 5'7, 116 pounds, athletic build) --> I've started to gain some more muscle.
2) Play basketball in the park almost everyday --> Sort of...
3) I need to change my attitude about life. (1. Stop being pessimistic at times. 2. Try my best in everything I do, and then just hope for the best.) ---> Keeping this in mind whever I'm about to do something; it does wonders.

*****As soon as my knee injury heals and I expect myself to be back to normal this week =D

To everyone: Wow, some of you guys are really busy! Best of luck to everyone! It is all within our ability! We just need the willpower! Don't falter comrades!

Hey everyone. Here is my abbreviated list.

Academic
1) Finish my summer reading assignment by Nicholas Carr, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Minds (as you can imagine, quite fascinating. 😀)
2) Get ready for my college classes with supplies and stuff
3) Figure out which language I'm going to study in college (bombed my French placement exam, and I now prefer not to take that language again)
4) Brush up on some basic Spanish, maybe
5) Read more often
6) Sort out my study approach and get ready for college work

Personal
1) Work on my speaking voice (mumble a lot and don't speak really clearly, so hoping to change that before college)
2) Continue with my running plan (hit a small road-block with a possible medical thing, but pretty much have the green light from a cardio doctor to continue for now); hoping to run a 5K next to my college in September, where I'm hoping to break 30 minutes.
3) Work on my diet and eat better.

Shreyasthegreat, I've been running for a few months at this point. Not an expert by any means, but I'd be more than happy to help with my limited experience if you ever need any advice. If I may, I would suggest C25K. I would try a 5K before a 10K, but it's your choice. Good luck in your running adventures! (Tip: Check out the Runner's World website and forums, really helpful).

I received a lifetime ban on college confidential for mocking some trolls. Lol. I didn't even get a warning. 🙁

Wow! I'm reading the same book. I haven't started it yet; is it really good, AHMD? I still can't get over the fact that we're reading the same book, lol.

Also, how are you working on you "speaking voice"?

@NYSE, I was also perma-banned, as were a lot of other people I know.

Looks like College Confidential doesn't support confidentiality!

A crackhead dream of mine is to learn the four strokes and swim competitively in college. If any of you are swimmers or have any advice as to how to get started, please tell me!

Also, if anyone here needs AP Biology help, just ask! I got a 4 on the exam and I TA'd that class last semester.

@drorthoman: I was perma banned too xD

It's not terrible. I'm through Chapter Two. The author makes some good points, but I'm not a big fan of how he goes so much into the science of our brains changing because of internet. I remember reading a review where he was criticized for that, since studies show that the internet has helped us rather than hurt us. Wish he kept it to the cultural side (how much we use it, using our cell phones rather than having conservations, etc.), but it's still interesting.

With my voice, I'm just trying to focus on keeping it clear and not talking too fast whenever I'm talking to someone. Can't do much more than that. Just hoping it sticks.

Sounds like CC was really into banning people. Thanks to an old forum I used to frequent for sportswriting, you can have this GIF to remember CC by.

I hit finish halfway through my language placement exam.
