Hello fellow pre-med students, this is only my second post however i’v been a long time reader of these forums.

My question to you is, do you have that “ I don’t care how long it takes, i’m going to graduate medical school nomatter what” type of optimism? (I’m 21).

I’m going to give a short belief description of myself without boring you guys, I consider myself very humble, mature, and a looong term life planner. I’v watched high school friends and premed colleagues who also once’d claimed to be aspiring MDs “give up” and change careers. I’d say 60% of them was just “all talk” until they found out the minimum length of (4 years plus minimum of 3 in residency). The others 35% were actually serious and determained however ended up discovering during PreMed that they’re not passionate about. The remaining 5% went through with their word like me.

Now back to my main thesis of this post, my youth inspires me because I don’t have any problem sacrificing my 20s to do what i’ll enjoy for the rest of my life (family medicine general practitioner) whereas my generation (the millennials), tend to have the “I want it right now” outlook.

I’v also read a good thread on this site titled “how old is too old to start medical school?”, and I was surprised and inspired at all the 40+ year olds who have the strong passion in medicine, that they’re doing whatever it takes to “make it happen”, meaning aging is NOT an obstacle if you truly want to practice medicine.

In conclusion, I don’t care about the money aspect of this profession at all, nor the “glamours respect” gained from it. I’m choosing this route because i’v known my desire of being a physician since the age of 7 years old.

My greatest respect to ALL non-traditional students, especially those over 30 for chasing your dreams and proving to society that it’s really never too old.

I've been inspired to be a doctor because of personal experiences. I particularly want to be a plastic surgeon because of my own case of gynecomastia. This is 4 years plus 6 years residency (14 total years). I tell people that and they think it is crazy. I come from a rural town where a good amount of my high school graduate peers went straight into the workforce. Granted, they are making a lot of money; however, they will work hard for the rest of their life. I want to become a doctor because I do not mind school, I love it! I love helping others and the idea of medical school sounds like an extremely fun and competitive process to me. I do not mind the time. Money has never been a big factor in what I do, as I would hate to work extremely difficult labor for a good paycheck. Also, becoming a doctor will surely keep myself and my potential family in very comfortable living.
