NASA announced 2 doctors as astronauts

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're a doctor in internship. You just don't have a license.

So you can call yourself a doctor but you just can't practice in any legal capacity right? Is it complicated to re-enter a residency program if you pull off something like Dr. Kim.

For him? No. For like, you or me? Yeah. But he'll likely finish his intern year before he heads off to space, as they will likely want him to have a medical license for his work at NASA.

So not exactly.

It's complicated and varies by state but generally:

When you start internship you get an educational medical license.

Once you complete internship and pass step 3 you can apply for a full medical license.

See my post above.

Depends on how long he decides to stay with NASA. If he decides to come back after 5 or 10 years he'll probably have to re-do intern year since by that time he'll have forgotten most of what he learned during internship and won't be able to function as a 2nd year EM resident.

It's not a license, at least not in my state, it's merely a training permit that allows you to engage in educational activities related to medicine at a designated institution.

Now those are resumes! Both look like fantastic choices.

I think @Goro need to bump up his clinical hours
This is what medical school would have done me:

I bet if they posted on SDN there'd still be people saying they needed to do X amount of volunteer and clinical hours :hilarious:

Combat medic doesn't count as clinical experience cause all they do is basic first aid. /s

Mgh has another person from dept of anesthesia on the active astronaut list but not sure if an MD

So you can get a PhD and be a prof at a med school but you couldn't survive med school? Doesn't make sense ._.
"Have you considered a gap year?"
Although, that advice is generally given to people who actually need it ( like, they have no clinical experience or volunteering, just a ton of research and shadowing, etc.). I agree people on SDN are neurotic about the EC's but the gap year advice normally comes from someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

Oh I know. I'm just being facetious.
