So far i've only gotten one mean comment, and it was by someone posing as giving advice. Basicaaly they told me GPA means nothing, or will even count against me even though it is good, because I chose to go to no-name school due to financial reasons. I figure they are just trying to discourage competition.

I left the comment because I wanted others in my situation to know that there will always be people with silly things to say. Hopefully if I get an acceptance others in my situation will be encouraged. Actually, one commentor on my profile told me to ignore the mean comment, so there you go, there are good and bad comments out there. Just weed through them. If anything really nasty was posted I would delete it.

Why thank you. You've done pretty well yourself Mr. Goldwater scholar ;)
MCAT was good to us, all the cool kids have 37's

*Please before anyone says anything, I am not indicating that a 37 is the score you need for admissions, I am just teasing because we both have the same score*

Congrats on the acceptance RxnMan. You deserve it. I'm sure you'll do well in medical school and prove how qualified you really are.

Rxnman - you already know this, but you deserve everything you've gotten.
And sometimes people say some very encouraging things too. Thanks.

From someone who has had to weather MANY nay-sayers (from random Internet ghosts to my ugrad advisor!), living well is the best revenge, and don't take them too seriously:

"Congratulations. It only took the worst natural disaster in US history for you to be accepted to med school."
If I could, I would steal this line and tell people this is how I got in!

I likes to post the mean comments so I can imagine all of the red faces on the other end of the montitor. So sue me.

Just be glad those immature people who are bitter about not being accepted won't be our future doctors. for the adcoms who told those folks to hit the door.

I'm sick of being blamed for the whole thing.

He was the one who brought it up again if you go to first page, last post.
I didn't ever remember it was him who made that comment, but apparently he likes to hold grudges because he just brought it up again out of nowhere, for no good reason but to start the stupid argument again.

I'm not the one who needs the chill pill. ;)

Hehe. I feel I have to be the first to comment on this.

I don't really consider myself to be strongly in favor of the way the URM system and AA works for medical school in this country. I know where I stand on the issue. Really, my problem (and hence my new legacy rant!) is about people who don't put in effort and gain admissions anyway.

That said, I just looked at your profile. You, sir, are a highly qualified applicant. I would love to have you as my classmate. Not because of the token URM status, but rather because you are a balanced, all-around excellent candidate. I realize AA is necessary for various reasons, and I won't dispute its validity here. But when we get to the point where everyone is simply considered for their credentials, such as yours, then we will have made progress. Congratulations on all of your achievements, and best of luck in the application cycle!

(Edited for clarity)

Wow, that was one of the best posts I have seen on here. I entirely agree.

When I applied to undergrad I had several friends that definitely exploited AA to get into presitigious schools. This made me believe that AA is sometimes counterintuitive and counterproductive when weighed too heavily (yet one of my other buddies eligible for AA declined to indicate his race because he was so disgusted with the other guys...a ballsy and respectable choice). However, apparently my other friends were bad apples because every md applicant I have spoken to or ran across has been VERY qualified regardless of race. If you are a 3.6+ and 30+ MCAT, you got in because your scores are competitive. I think those racist haters fail to realize that there are MANY applicants falling under AA and thus competion for so-called AA spots (I no very little about the veracity of these assertions) is equivalent.

I am white, but I realize if I don't get into the school it is because there are thousands of other competive applicants...it is not because an adcom admitted someone with a 2.1 and a 21 MCAT (sorry if those are anyone's scores) under the premise of AA.

LOL, run, they are coming for ya! For real though...I checked the box under ethnicity that said "Black/African American" because that is what I am. Despite the fact that people have exploited it, I can't change the fact that I'm 6'5, used to have corn rows (lol typical), dark skin, have jamaican parents, etc. They'll find out sooner or later that I'm black, so rather than doing the supposedly honorable thing of leaving my race unchecked, I'll just erase all doubt. I'm not bashing anyone; I'm just stating my rationale. But lets honestly squash this topic now, because it will undoubtedly take over this thread and somehow become nasty, heated and racist. So back to the topic:

I think that I've escaped alot of MDAPPS heat because I'm mostly applying to schools that the majority of SDNers aren't. So they are less likely to think I'm taking their spot. Now if I dared put WashU on their or Hopkins then I think I might get it.

I think you might be on to something there. Most of the mean comments I have seen on people'ss profiles are about how "you will never get into so-and-so school" or "how could you even consider yourself worthy of so-and-so" or "you applied to a lot of great schools you must be an 'insert racial stereotype here' ". I guess some people don't get the concept of reach schools, or wanting to see if its possible to get in even though there are so many applicants.

anyway back to the main topic, i totally agree with ya OP. constructive criticism is always welcome. but if you've got nothing nice to say, it is better to say nothing at all. and if you've got something mean to say, atleast have the balls to leave your name.

AMEN!!!!!! I agree with this especially the last line. You gotta love how all those who leave nasty comments are too cowardly to admit their names be it a username or real name.

I'm not going to completely comment on the whole AA system, however I'll say this.....

Of the few African Americans I know that have been accepted, I can't sincerely say that there is any one of them that got in with anything but very good stats and good ECs. In fact, one of my good AA friends just got into UPenn and I don't believe his URM status is what got him there. he'd done plenty of volunteer work, been leaders in student orgs, and done plenty of research and most of all he had a 33 on his MCAT and 3.8+GPA. Quite similarly, the other AA applicants I knew had done quite a lot to make them stand apart and good scores, so take it for what its worth but I wouldn't be so quick to judge unless you know the whole story on each specific applicant or you've sat in the adcom meetings and know what's going through their heads.

You can, of course, simply not allow comments to be posted or displayed for your profile at any time.

As for the spam comments - really? I'm curious about that...I haven't received any.

I get 20+ per day. Why? I don't know. But if anyone would like some viagra, to refinance their house, or some special introductory offers for online gambling, just let me know and I'll post them.
