So, this is a question spinning off on a previous thread. I am finishing out my AD service in 2 years as a GMO. After this, I will be finishing a 3 year Anesthesia residency with the possibilty of a 1 year fellowship. During residency (post AD), I am required to either go Reserve, Guard, or IRR. Here are my two questions

1) If you are in IRR, are there stipulations that you can't be removed from a training program? I know no doc has never been called back by IRR, but with recruitment numbers down and no end in sight to OEF/OIF, this is a concern.

2) If one elects to go into the Guard (as a part of their 8 year commitment) after completing their AD, are they deployable during residency or are they exempt? Is the commitment served while in residency, so you essentially get paid and don't own any time after finishing your residency? I know this can't be right, but this is what others are making it sound like.

If you go Select Reserve or Guard, you may be able to be a part of the Medical in Training (MIT) program. This would allow you to drill only 2 times per year and protect you from call up. There may be an additional commitment after your training. If you go IRR, you have no protection.
