An association for students interested in PM&R is in the works right now. Currently, the Chair of the association is trying to find the PM&R Clubs Presidents that are out there to bring them all together in forming a National PM&R Student Association Executive Council. IF YOU ARE A PRESIDENT OF A PM&R CLUB, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS SO THAT WE CAN BEGIN OUR WORK TOGETHER.
IF YOU ARE NOT A CLUB PRESIDENT OR A STUDENT INTERESTED IN PM&R, WE ARE CURRENTLY INTERESTED IN ALIGNING THE CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE AND MEETING OUR SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES.
A national association is a huge thing and is something that has been missing for quite some time. The ultimate goal of the national association is to promote PM&R among students, provide better access to PM&R clerkships/information/research, improve existing clubs, and establish new PM&R clubs at schools where they don't already exist.
This is very exciting and I hope that the PM&R Clubs out there will work to join together.

What will you do for the med schools that only generate 1 PM&R every few years, like mine?

So did you put down “President of the PM&R Interest Club” on your CV?

Seriously – noble cause OP. The field can certainly use more notoriety at the med school level.

If you have something constructive to add to the thread, please feel free to help things progress along. While it's certainly something that has been remiss in the past, we are forward-thinking and intend to make a real difference for students who may feel isolated as the few PM&R-interested. On a basic level, we hope to fill a gap that has been an obvious oversight for many who have gone on before. A wide majority of the other professional groups have their own student organizations, which has dramatically increased exposure to their fields, simultaneously stratifying their long-term growth. By establishing a student association (which hopefully will be overseen by forward-thinking attendings who already understand the concept), we will grow the field and make large contributions to the future of PM&R.

The national association has already created a basic template of how to get an interest group started and improve those that exist. We have already gathered materials providing a student services office with a club constitution to providing a detailed list of local mentors for individuals to do clerkships to contact info for school speakers. The association will work to serve the interests of the individual who is the only one interested in PM&R at his or her school, and help those who consist of a group in a given location. The underlying point stands that PM&R is an amazing field that has something for everyone. We intend to help students reach their goals, however broad and no matter the situation.

hi 3DoctorS,

I pm-ed you also.

I would like to know if this "national association" is an official association - i.e. budget, bylaws, non-profit status, etc. or if this is a concept you are trying to promote. If there is an official association, more info would be great for those interested - i.e. contact info, website, etc.

If it is not an official association, I would still like the contact info of the "chair" so we can brainstorm ideas.

overall i think it's a great idea - several of the official organizations may be interested - but as it is now - this is an anonymous internet based forum so you probably won't be able to make much progress in terms of getting support from the AAP or the AAPM&R with just your posts here on sdn.

let me know how i can help.

Again, thanks for the input. We're set with national support right now. As put before, we're looking for the club presidents. You're probably right that a the stream of residents and attendings replying to this so far aren't going to provide the necessary tools needed at the moment from the club presidents out there. In the case that they do exist, we'll be waiting for you.

Thought this might be interesting:

http://www.aocpmr.com/student-conference-2011/

As it turns out, 26 student chapters have now been established under a national student PM&R Association with 700 student members. Last Spring, 150 students from across the country came to the National PM&R Student Conference. This year, there will be an estimated 250 at the conference, with the addition of several hands-on workshops onto the didactics geared for students.

The PM&R student grassroots movement is alive and well...

3Doctors,

I was just informed by our student dean here at PCSOM of this organization. I will be meeting with her next week to see where we need to move to next at PCSOM with regards to establishing our chapter. As an OMS-1 I am still getting settled in all the aspects of medical school. Please reply/ PM me with where I need to go after PCSOM approval.
