Navy Anesthesia

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Until recently, anesthesia was a residency where many interns were selected straight-through. Last year, however, it was significantly more competitive and I would expect that to continue. I would plan on a GMO tour if this were my specialty of choice.

If you go overseas you will have to do a three year GMO, in US is two years but there are some billets with the marines that are only 1 year(Okinawa). FS and DMO are both three years.

For anethesia, rads, derm and possibly ER you will have to do a GMO before getting in. Chances of going straight through are very slim.:scared: There is a previous thread about then formula that the Navy uses to evaluate applicants and Internships, GMO's and the rest of the Navy stuff is more important in terms of points awarded than the Grades and USMLE's. But you still need to have good boards and class ranking.

To clarify:

The three year tours are only if you are married and/or have kids, making it a three year accompanied tour.

If you're single, all the tours are for two years with the exception of a few hardship billets (Okinawa/Diego Garcia/Crete/etc).

The one year billets in Okinawa will be changing over to two year tours in the near future as the USMC is moving away from the one year tours for their unaccompanied folks.
