Hi...

Just curious if anyone has participated in a Navy clerkship during dental school? I am curious about your experience and impression.

Thanks,
DMyers

I did a Navy clerkship last December. It was a great expereince and really opened my eyes to residencies outside of my own dental school and the quality of education available in the Navy. Attending my clerkship was the biggest influence in my decision to apply for a residency.

Where did you do your clerkship? Did you maily observe, or were you able to have some responsibilities? Will you be participating in an AEGD/GPR or a specialty residency? Are we limited to certain locations to do our clerkships?

Thanks!

DM

I completed my clerkship in Bethesda at NNMC (National Naval Medical Center) where all of the Navy dental postgraduate programs are. During my week there I was able to rotate through all of the residencies, except AEGD since last year they didn't have the program available at NNMC. They bascially paired me up with a resident and I hung out with them and was able to ask questions and get an idea of what they did on a daily basis. I think for liability reasons I don't believe we are able to do much in the way of hands on experiences.

After my clerkship I made the decision to apply for a Pros residency. I got accepted and will begin the program next July at NNMC. You can basically do a clerkship anywhere there is a residency program or dental clinic, and of coarse the the department head is willing to have you.

If you need any help getting in contact with a specific program or have questions about the process jsut let me know and I'll try to help you out as much as I can. Best of luck.

Where are you at in terms of your payback? Did you just graduate and are currently doing an AEGD right now? Or have you done some payback years already? Just curious if it's pretty reasonable to get accepted into a Pros residency after the 1 year AEGD is done, but before any 'payback' years are fulfilled.

I'm a 4th year dental student and will begin my residency right after I graduate from d-school.

Wow! Nice work getting into a Pros residency. Is your situation unique, that the Navy accepts students into a residency right out of school? Any idea how competitive perio is in the Navy? Thank you for the offer to assist me in getting contact information. I will keep you posted.

Nice work!

Thank you,

It all depends on the residency. From my research and discussions with people in the Navy dental corps in Bethesda the residencies that have accepted new grads in the recent years are Comp, Pros, and O/S. I know that last years Comp program had two new grads in it but this year none were accepted. It really depends on the year and the applicant pool that you are competing against.

You must have had great board scores and GPA too, I assume?

To be honest I really feel that it's up to each individual program leader and what they want in a resident. I'm not really your "typical" d-school grad. I'm prior service and a bit older than most in my class. My board scores and gpa I think are pretty average, but I do excell in my pre-clinic and clinic ranking. You also have LOR's to submit, letter of motivation, doing a clerkship and doing an interview with the program head..... so it's hard to say what the deciding factor was for the board, I'm just honored that I was chosen.

Well congrats!👍

Does anyone know about summer clerkships? I have summers off and I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing for these 45 active duty days. I figure the first summer will be OIS, but then what?
