Can anyone offer any insight as to how important it is to do rotations through navy programs if you are interested in a full deferment? The problem I am running into is that I would like to rotate at some of the civilian programs I am interested in, and I am having trouble fitting in a Navy rotation too. I know that deferments are not common, but I plan on doing a civilian residency at some point. Would it suffice just to interview with the navy program leaders for the specialty I am interested in, or do I need to do a rotation in order for them to consider me for a full deferment? I am not sure what the best route to take is.

I did two Navy rotations unrelated to the field I got the full deferment in. I did phone interviews with the Specialty leader and both residency program directors. The phone interview were after I had done my Navy rotations. I highly doubt that the guys I interviewed with ever got any feedback from my rotations. Let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like I will only be able to do one rotation with the Navy in something unrelated. I hope to interview with the program I am interested at that time. Do you have any recommendations regarding the interview process with the specialty leader when seeking a full deferment?

Definitely call them early. Email this person. Let them know that you are interested and that you are on the ball. Tell them which programs you have received interviews from. If you can rotate with the individual for a day or whatever. I am convinced that face time is key (or phone time).
I don't know which field you are going into or what, but I got a full deferment in Emergency medicine. Originally there were about 12 of us who wanted 6 spots. It turns out they gave away 9 full deferments. You never know what's going to happen at the selection board. Good luck.
😕

Gree0411, I am a little confused. If I am interested in a full deferment, does the Military PDs in my field of interest have a say on whether I will get my derferment or not? Thanks

Yes, they have a say along with the specialty leader. They are all present at the selection board. That is why you must interview with everyone. I'm not sure who has more clout, but they all contribute. I just did phone interviews for about 20 minutes each. It was a piece of cake.
