Navy GME Application?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here is the link. I'm not sure if it's my browser settings or security issues, but I'm only able to access it from my computer at work:

https://nmmpte.med.navy.mil/gmeapplication/default.asp

Apparently, there's some security glitch and you can only access it from dot mil accounts . . . . . of course. It was way too easy to be able to do this junk from home.

I hope they fix it by the time the board results come out.

Don't you know the DoD motto: "Work harder not smarter" 😀

I got a copy of the bumed note. I noticed that they didn't list a spot for urology at San Diego. I'm not sure if this was a typo, but does anyone know if San Diego lost its urology residency?

Thanks. I did see urology up there (not that I'm interested). Nor was anes or rads (is it because of the transitional year)?

It said only FP abd Psych were granting continuous contracts and not medicine?

Is there a link available for the GME 2 application that does not require the use of a DoD computer? This could be an issue for those of us out here in the civilian training world.

It only lists the intern programs. Anes/Rads are R2 positions in the Navy. FP and Psych will have a few continuous contracts offered. There was hope to expand that, but with graduating numbers and operational comittments, that did not happen this year. For the 2012 class and beyond, things should be better.

So then how do things work? Are they the only interns that apply a second time for their 2nd PGY? At that point it looks like GMOs would end up with all of those slots with no real choice but to do a GMO for people fresh out of intern year. This of course assumes I am not totally missing the picture- very possible.

No you got it just right. That's why the competitive specialites are almost exclusively filled with former GMOs.

You can apply to go straight through as an intern, but you're competing with all of the GMOs applying.

So how does it work for say GS, which is listed as something new grads can apply for? I would guess if they don't get it they are thrown into an internship slot and get to come back and join the anes/rads/GMOs to try again. Is that right?

You are correct in that GMOs and Current interns are both applying for positions and GMOs have a leg up. It does not mean that current interns won't be selected, just less likely. For very competitive specialties like Ophtho and Derm, it won't happen. For competive specialties like Orth, GS, Rads, and Anes, it can happen, but don't bet money on it.
