To all the Navy folks,

I have a couple questions about the timeline for someone wanting to do a hitch as a GMO or flight surgeon after completing a civilian preliminary surgery year (with no military obligation/scholarship) before returning to a civilian residency. After the prelim year is complete and license is in hand, I understand that the first step is OIC.

1) GMO: What is the extra training (if any) after completing OIC before heading to the fleet as a GMO? How many months? What type of duty station would a fresh GMO be sent to? San Diego? Iraq? A hunk of steel in the water? Is a 3 year hitch the minimum to be a GMO?

2) FS: Does the budding FS go straight to FS school after OIC? Is a 3 year hitch the minimum to become a GMO?

I appreciate any info. I don't want to get on a recruiter's mailing list like I did after high school (I still receive calls from time to time). Thanks.
