I’m applying for Navy HPSP and had a question about assignments. I understand deployments can be 6–9 months, and that’s fine. What I’m asking about is something different, being sent OCONUS (Japan, Guam, Europe, etc.) for a 2–3 year tour with family.

How common is it for new HPSP dentists to be forced into an overseas PCS like that during the 4-year payback? I’d really prefer to stay stateside, and I’m willing to take any U.S. base. Just trying to get a realistic sense of the odds.

Understandable concern. However there is a very real possibility of being given orders OCONUS, with Japan being far more likely than Europe.

On the bright side, many people that initially have anxiety or other concerns about going overseas end up finding it to be an amazing experience.

Bottom line, do not take a military scholarship without being willing to accept the possibility of an overseas/OCONUS tour.

Chances of getting Europe as a new LT is slim to none. Okinawa is a much more probable option for overseas assignment due to availability. If you are looking to stay stateside then taking on one of the ships ported in San Diego or Norfolk is a sure way of doing that. You can also ask for camp Lejeune in NC or 29 palms.

Bottom line is you are expected to do an operational tour after your credentialing tour/PGY-1. These are normally served with the marines(green) or with ships(blue). Most of the desirable duty stations are harder to get as new LT.
