I have a few questions of clarification regarding the Navy HPSP.

I understand the commitment is year per year in for medical school or residency (whichever is longer). Does the internship year after medical school count as a payback year?

Say I wanted to do a GMO tour and get out, is there such thing as a 4 year GMO to accomplish this?

Would this be after my internship year or can I do it right out of Med School?

Does the Navy really try to get you to do the military match or are people generally given a GMO tour when they ask?

This has been a resource I have been using:

No.

Sort of. Most GMO tours are 2 years. Sometimes you can extend orders, sometimes you can do back-to-back tours.

You have to do at least an internship year because that is the minimum length of training time necessary to be able to qualify for an unrestricted medical license.

Varies. Some specialties want to take residents straight through. Others usually require enough points in their match rankings that doing a GMO tour is essential to be competitive.

You need an intern year to do a gmo. If you volunteer for a gmo tour, you’re almost certain to get one (except for a handful of specialties). You can definitely GMO and out. Plenty of people do it, and there is actually a guide on this forum somewhere so you can do it right.
