Hi! I am currently a rising senior in undergrad (I will graduate in May 2014). I am also currently applying to dental school for a position in the class of 2018. I have been trying to begin applying to the Navy HPSP for about a month now. I finally got in contact with a recruiter last week, and he has been insisting that I cannot apply for the scholarship until I am accepted into dental school. I know that this is not true because it states so on the Navy website and my brother also successfully applied for and received the scholarship two years prior as a senior in undergrad who was not yet accepted to dental school. I explained this in great detail to my recruiter yesterday, to which he replied that "If I was planning on applying to Ivy League schools, then I was allowed to apply for the scholarship now." I have never heard of something like this and I would like some answers because I really want to get started on applying for this scholarship. Any advice?

Find a new recruiter. You should begin the HPSP application process after you have taken the DAT, and at the same time you are applying for schools. It doesn't matter if it is Ivy League or not. It is true that you cannot complete the process until you have an acceptance in hand, but you can certainly start it. It is a long process, so it is not wise to wait until you have an acceptance to start it. If this recruiter won't help you, find a different one.

.

When you get a chance, shoot me a PM with specifics about yourself (where you live, undergrad, GPAs, etc and the recruiter's name and location.). If that recruiter doesn't want to help you, I know there would be plenty of people who would be willing to help whom I can get in touch with. Just shoot me a PM if you want assistance.
