Hey Everyone!

I'm just curious, who's going to OIS this summer (June 9th)? I'm pretty excited about it all! I got a letter with some helpful hints and tips along with some of my paperwork, but does anyone who has been there already have anything extra to add? I've got a million questions for anyone with the patience, but I'd really like to see how many SDNers are heading up to Rhode Island this summer.

I'm also headed to OIS in Newport and am very excited. My commissioning date is May 16, so I haven't received much information regarding OIS yet. I too would love to hear more from someone in the know.

I just finished writing a detailed description of my experience at OIS but I managed to somehow delete it?so if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Rotatores,

I just sent you a PM requesting detailed info on Navy OIS. Please reply!

No OIS for me...it'll be next summer...I'll be interested to hear about it, though!

YOu can definitely call me Ensign Pope! Please, for the love of god, don't call me ma'am...reminds me of catholic school!

I dont' know anything about what you all will be doing in Newport but I had a summer share there last summer and it is a RIDICULOUS party scene. And the Navy guys were always out. Newport ROCKS in the summer.

To those who are going to OIS, when did you receive your orders to Newport? I was offered the HPSP scholarship in March, was commissioned today, but was just told that I may not be able to attend OIS until the summer after my first year of medical school. This is news to me. I suppose it's not a huge deal, but I was looking forward to going to officer school now that I technically am an officer. Further, I hadn't made any plans for the summer because I thought that I would be in Newport. The folks who swore me in said that they would let me know for sure next week after checking with Bethesda. Alas, another weekend of anxiety!

I am getting comissioned next week and I had requested a while back to try to make it to OIS this summer also. I was told the class had been full for some time and that I'd go next year. No big deal...what recruiting district are you out of?

Hmm.....

I find it hard to believe that OIS can fill up so soon. To answer your question, my recruiting district is out of Buffalo, though my recruiter is in Albany. I'm on a 4 year scholarship, and I assume that a year delay for OIS doesn't effect the scholarship, but I don't understand how I can do 4 active duty tours, as required, when I won't do OIS until 2004.
I'm excited about OIS, but sometimes I wonder if anyone knows how all of this works.

Well, I'm was recruited out of the Northern CA region (San Francisco district), so maybe you East coasters have priority or something 🙂.

I wouldn't worry about getting your 4 active duty tours in...they know what they're doing...I've heard that some people don't do OIS until even later that...! It is required, though, to have completed OIS before starting your internship. Hmm, have you been directed to the website that has the student handbook? Or did you get it at your commissioning? There's alot of info on that website. PM me if you need it.

Good luck! Maybe we'll see each other next summer in Newport!

😎

I don't start OIS until after residency b/c I'm in the FAP. Do you all know if the minimum PFTs are the same for OIS and OCS candidates. I received an email stating that OCS expects their candidates to be at least Excellent Low to pass the PFTs.

Thanks.
