I can guess the answer to this question but I was hoping some of the people on here with current Navy Peds experience can shed some light on the present state of Navy peds. Specifically, does the Navy train Peds Critical Care fellows, or Peds EM fellows, and if so what programs are available and how many utilizations tours need to be done before you get one?

Peds EM: No and they never will. They trained 2 like 20 years ago and they never quite figured out the best way for them to work. (Caveat, they let some ER folks do PEM fellowships b/c they can still work in a adult ER after training, but not Pediatricians)

Peds Critical Care - yes. I know one friend in fellowship right now. You need to plan on at least 1 utilization tour first. Currently, there is one full time PICU billet in Afghanistan so they deploy a lot (take turns filling that billet), but no way to know what it'll be 3-4 years from now.

The specialty leader actually asked me if I was interested in PICU b/c there was a need. I preferred Peds EM and at the time was gearing to apply for civilian training after my obligation ended (but then I ended up taking a Gen Peds job - long story).

But anyway, yes, PICU is possible depending on what's available with your timing. Peds EM, no.

If you want peds em, your best route would be peds internship to GMO to ER residency to utilization tour to peds em fellowship to retirement. That would be best case.

I figured Peds EM was a loooong shot. Its good to know that PICU is still an option as that is the route I am planning on knowing full well I'll have to pay my dues to get it. Now I just have to figure out a way to match into peds!
