Hey all,

Regarding the navy reserves, do they also have a 90-day boots-in-ground policy in place as with the army reserves and national guard? I am interested in serving our country through the military, but I do have family to think about and would not like to be away for more than the 90 + 30 days. Furthermore, is the 180 days of active service for the VA to consider you a veteran based on non-consecutive ADT and possible with these deployments or would you have to go AD and serve for 180 days at a time for this?

From ancient memory of my recall to Navy AD and deployment in 2009:

1. Generally, physicians and dentists had 90 day orders. RNs, medical administration officers, pharmacists, physical therapists, etc, had 12 month orders. But those were general guidelines, and they can always turn on a dime if needed to serve the needs of the US government. Burn this into your head: the needs of the government come first. Your personal needs and wishes are a distant second, at best.

2. For the VA to consider you a veteran for benefits, your orders must specifically be under US Code Title 10 (official recall to AD). Those Title 10 orders must total at least 180 days as well. Reserve drill, reserve AT, reserve ADT, etc, do not count towards obtaining veteran status for VA benefits.

3. Unless you have it in an iron-clad written contract from Uncle Sam, NOTHING in the military is guaranteed. And recruiters always have completely accurate information, never make accidental mistakes, and never intentionally misspeak for purposes of obtaining their quotas.

Not trying to sound cynical here. I respect your desire to serve, but just realize that by signing on the dotted line you're obligating yourself in a very serious manner.

I knew of a few folks who were deployed state side to back fill for almost 2 years, but that was during the height of Iraq and Afghanistan before we had our numbers built up, but as others said anything is possible. You never know if we might get drawn into a major conflict or multi-front war again and if your AOC is in limited supply you might be spending significant time away from family.
