As I understand the Navy requires (Or at least strongly recommends) you to apply for a residency. Are their any draw backs from not accepting the residency? Will this be looked down upon? Will this dictate where you will be stationed and when you will be deployed? Thanks.
 
I think the residencies are great in the military and a great way to make sure you are a well-rounded dentist. I also think it's a great addition to a resume if you get out of the service. There are not to many places in the US where the residents get to interact with all of the specialists either. If you are not planning on making the Navy a career, then I would say it's not necessary to accept a residency. You will do a credentialing tour, which will be similar to a residency, but possibly without the CE credit (250 hrs) or the certification of completion.
