Hey guys, I'm seeing that the NBDE 1 tests in specific content areas of science, and am wondering if my undergrad courses would contain the same or similiar material that would confer success on the NBDE 1.

I'm working really hard in my Immunology and A & P classes right now, above necessary to achieve an A, because I'm assuming that knowing as much as possible will eventually help me on the NBDE 1.

Is this a fair assumption?

Questions and comments please!!!

The DAT has been used to compare performance on NDBE Part I as an indicator on standardized test taking abilities, however, I think your performance in Dental school is a much better indicator. They blew past everything I learned in undergrad in one semester. So do well in dental school, do well on Part I.

All we are allowed to say after we have taken boards are general statements. Most of the questions on boards cover a broad area of topics, but ask questions that will make you feel like they were designed under a microscope. Seriously. Many are very specific. So if you didn't learn it in undergrad or dental school (which is likely) you won't know it for that test. Most of the things you need to know you will learn in your first year of dental school. Of course, doing well now is important but there seems to be a big discrepancy between study/doing well in dental school and under grad and your ability to memorize literally giga bytes worth of minutia on that test. I studied for 2 weeks for part one and part two. I did well, and got the same score on both. I know people that started studying 1 year before the exam and only got about 5 points higher than me just refreshing stuff in the 2 weeks prior.

I'd like to propose a hypothetical situation. The microbiology-Pathology section of the NBDE is weighted at 100 pts, representing 25% of the total exam.

Let's say in undergrad I ace Microbiology and Immunology, with pristine notes from the book and above that, I have pretty much memorized Micro and Immuno books like the back of my hand. These books are made by doctors themselves...I do plan to still study arduously in D school, but whatever I can do now to confer studlyness later is much desired.

Would this knowledge I gain be close to or well more than I would need to know for doing well on that subsection of the NBDE 1? Whats the scale- I know dental school is a BIG step from undergrad, but how much more detail can you get?

Thanks!!!
