Quick question Im still rep-dental in college but am just curious about this. Part 2 of the exam s practical right? Like you have to perform certain procedures on a patient and get it evaluated. You get your license after this exam right?

Also if you are unable to find a patient or are too worried he/she might not show up. Can you use your parents or a relative for this? Has any1 done this in the past? Thanks

NBDE Part II is still a written board exam.

It goes like this for dentistry:

NBDE Part I --> NBDE II --> State/Regional Licensure Exam

The State/Regional licensure exam is where the clinical testing comes in and that's where you have to worry about finding patients and patients not showing up.

Yah-E nailed it, the NBDE exams have nothing to do with licensure (although they are necessary).

The patients you need for licensure exams must fulfill certain requirements, which is often more difficult than it may sound. You can't just have anybody sit in your chair, the pts. are pre-screened (I've heard) once you submit their names.

oh cool thanks guys. That clears up a lot of things. Now for the state licensure exam. Im in NY and right now they require one year residency be4 you can practice. Does that mean I still have to take the licensure exam? Also for the licensure exam is the person supposed to have a certain amount of things wrong with their teeth. I mean I can have a relative do it to be safe and it will all be legit, no?

Also whats the big difference between part 1 and 2 of the NBDE if they are both written? Is part II as easy as part I. I mean I know they are hard but Ive read people just study qwuestions and the dental decks and do fine. Thanks so much guys for clearing this up.

No, as I understand it, the PGY-1 is in lieu of any licensure exam.

Part I is science-based and Part II is clinically-based. That's a *general* and broad summary.

Your family member would have to meet the specific diagnostic criteria for the licensing board.... Also, I have been told it can be a bad idea to use a family member as it might actually increase your stress and anxiety level by reminding you of the financial repercussions of failing. ie If I f-up this thing my $200K dental education is useless and they will be supporting me for the next six month until I can take it again... It all depends on the person and your relationship to them.

oh wow you can only take this exam every 6 months??? Also what exactly does this exam test for? Do I have to do a filling, crown, etc.. What re the standards? Thanks for cleearing it up.

What has to be done varies from exam to exam.

Go to: www.aadexam.org

Then click on "Testing Agencies" on the right-hand side. That lists the regional agencies, states involved, and has links to their sites where you can get more info.
