does anybody ever fail part 3? I've heard of failure rates for part 1 and 2, know classmates who have failed, but have never ever heard of a signle person who failed the prt 3 (pmlexis) exam. Is it even really possible? I'd assume so, but yeah....anybody ever hear of or know somebody who failed? Not sure what got me thinking this, i'm just curious....found out i passed the exam when i asboultely was not expecting to and guess just wondering, do they really fail anybody?

wats this part about ??

I haven't taken it yet but from my understanding its clinical podiatry with some clinical medicine (anesthesia, internal medicine, vascular, dermatology, etc). Part II had those sections in addition to some public health so I'm not sure if that section is repeated on part III

im guessin that at that point in your life passing part 3 shouldnt be a problem ?

Hopefully not. Remember, national boards are designed to establish minimum competency to practice podiatry. If you are competent and have demonstrated sound knowledge in the specialty then it shouldn't be an issue at all.

There is also a fair amount of podiatric surgery on it.

well of course not, you should be able to pass. however you should be able to pass part 1 at the end of 2nd yr, and part 2 in 4th year...all of them are about minimum competency. and yet you hear about a lot of people who fail parts 1 and 2 and i've never heard of anybody fail part 3.

as i said, i passed, but expected to fail because writing the exams so many questions seemd so crazy, like 2 answers could be right, or none of them were, and the xray's were incredibly poor quality. plus, i always tend to think i have failed though i've passed every board exam on the first try. heh.

i think i'm just wondering if anybody really does fail...because it seems like an almost (if not completly) 100% pass rate, and in that case what's the point of keeping prt 3....seems more of a money grab than trying to weed out people who are not prepared. at least with prts 1 and 2 it does serve that purpose. i dunno.

I see your point. I just feel that if you successfully go through part 1 and 2 then 3 is almost like puting the cherry on the cake sort of speak. I can't poll a large enough sample of residents who've taken part III to quote a percentage rate, but drawing from the experiences of friends and colleagues, i'd say it's pretty high (all of them passed).

I agree with you on that level. And given neither of us know anybody who has failed i can conclude that the pass rate is extremly high...because i know plenty of ppl who failed prt 1 and 2, i'm sure you do also. The only possible reason i can imagine is because you're no longer in school with the ppl and its more shameful to fail part 3 than part 1 or 2 (though it's pretty shameful to fail any part i guess).

Regardless, with such a high percentage rate it just seems like an incredibly expensive cherry to put on the cake ;)

Over the years, I have known several people to have failed the Part 3 exam. In Pennsylvania, one must pass Part 3 board exam in order to start residency program (with exception to Philly VA). Every year, there are usually 1 or 2 people who fail the exam and could not start their residency training in Philly in July. So far, I have not heard anyone failing in the greater Philly area so far.

I'm returning to podiatry after a long absence and it has been even longer since school and residency. Unfortunately I've got to take the NBPME Part 3 this time around and I'm beginning to remember how many of those niggly little things I never used in practice and have since forgotten. All of those things in the "real" world we assume we can look up if we ever really need to know. Does anyone with more recent experience have some suggestions on reading material and prepping for the exam. Thanks much, return2pod

I'd look up anesthesia - local and general and know about allergies to anesthetics and toxic doses

Procedures for forefoot and rearfoot surgery (pretty basic)

Anesthesia risks (ASA class) for pt with medical co-morbidities and best choices of anethesia for these patients

post-op complications and what to do with them

management of glucose pre-op in the DM patient

Hope this helps.
