Hello,

I go to a school on the quarter system (Stanford) and was wondering if someone who has gone through the application process or who goes there could take some time to help me out.

Labs
Biology labs - one quarter or two quarters needed?
Chemistry labs - my school's premedical association suggests two orgo labs to meet this requirement. Would one be enough to meet the requirement? Would it be wise to switch the second lab for a gen. chemistry lab perhaps?
Physics - seems like three quarters of labs is the way to go.

Chemistry
Most medical schools require two years of chemistry, but my school has 7 classes to choose for this category:
-General Chemistry)
-Organic Chemistry I: Structure and Reactivity)
-Organic Chemistry II: Organic Monofunctional Compounds
-Organic Chemistry III: Organic Polyfunctional Compounds
-Physical Chemistry
-Biochemistry I
-Biochemistry II
Which do you suggest leaving out, if any? (I would assume P chem, Biochem II, or Orgo III would be least needed)

Sorry if this post sounds haphazard. I don't really know how stringent the course requirements are when applying and would like to free up space for other classes if possible by taking only the minimum necessary on the premed side.

Thanks a ton.

I'm familiar with the quarter system (though I don't go to Stanford 🙁 - not smart enough lol). I'd recommend you getting an MSAR to look at the general requirements for each school. But yeah. Bio, chem, ochem, and physics require 2 semesters (or 3 quarters). Two quarters of labs are fine.

Organic and "non-organic" chemistry are distinguished, so ochem 1-3 are required in your case. My recommendation is for you to take gen chem and two biochems (or replace gen chem with p-chem if you really want).

Note: the quarters don't have to be completed consecutively.

To be safe everywhere, take 1 year of everything.

3 quarters inorganic
3 quarters organic
3 quarters bio
3 quarters physics

Then throw in at least 1 quarter of:
english
behavioral science
humanities
biochem
stats
some calc
I've even seen some schools that require genetics, upper cell bio, and anatomy

Again, to be safe everywhere. Unless you want to limit yourself.

And since you're on the quarter system, should be no problem. Classes are over before you know it. 😀
