Hello everyone, so like a couple months back I got my training done and got the certificate to volunteer for hospice. But at the same time I landed a really good job as an MA at a clinic (3,000+plus hours by the time i apply). Due to that I couldn't arrange any volunteering for hospice, but they called me today and were asking if i were still avaialbe . I also have some really good non-clinical volunteering coming up and the hospice stuff would really cram my schedule. Should I not volunteer for them because of my employment or do i need the clinical "volunteer" hours on my app?!?! thanks any advice is appreciated 🙂

Do not volunteer with the dying if the only reason you are doing it is to add it to your application. If that is your motivation, the dying and those who love them will thank you for not participating.

It is too bad that you took valuable time and resources from the hospice organization and then didn't give the hospice organization any of your time but it is very likely that you aren't the first pre-med to screw them over.

Helpful flowchart:

Do you genuinely want to volunteer with the hospice? --------------- Yes ---------------> Volunteer with the hospice

--------No, I just want to pad my app

---------Don't volunteer with the hospice

Hey look its not because I want to "pad" my app then I would have just volunteered at the hospital that is 2 blocks from my house, I told them I Would start at the end of April. I have a really tight schedule due to school and work and research BUT if volunteering for these Wonderfull people are advocated even though I have clinical hours I can just take a day off from work! And i didn't screw them over they were asking for my availability after schools over

I did not say you wanted to pad your application but that you appeared to be asking if you had to do this
do i need the clinical "volunteer" hours on my app?!?!
and I'm saying if you are doing it because you need these clinical "volunteer" hours on your app then you shouldn't put yourself out.

You clearly had considered doing this as a means to an end, not as an end in itself. In other words, you used the training you were given and would have used the hospice experience as something to put on your application in order to be admitted to medical school not because of any genuine desire to help the dying. The hospice people gave you the training needed to volunteer and now you have better, and more lucrative, things to do and so they get nothing in return for the investment they made in your training. That's what I mean by being screwed over. They trained you and then you turn out not to be available at the end of April unless you need this for the clinical hours it presents. I'm saying if you are doing it for the hours, don't do it.

Completely understand, I should have worded the question a little better. I have asked this question on sdn before (I was in Training at this time) and I was told that I didn't need the hospice volunteering and I should rather focus on my non clinical volunteering. Due to that I was a bit confused on how to handle the situation.
