You can be even more of a liquor snob than the douches that prattle on slinging knee deep BS about this and that wine and one year over another as whisky is fairly straightforward and easy to dissect and appreciate.
And as a bonus, the limp wang hipsters won't be able to enjoy it with you. Their palates are just too sensitive. Unless they're fronting for the ladies and slamming boilermakers.

Yes actually, but there are no gyms near here! Is there another way?

Already kind of into that, unfortunately it's a bit too expensive on my federal budget.

You can go on Groupon and see if there are any deals/gyms you don't know about. If you go to a med school attached to an undergrad there's probably some instructors that teach over there. If all else fails get a one-on-one trainer to help you learn, although that will probably cost more.

Also if you don't have the funds to be a liquor snob, you can always be a beer snob.

Hmm you must be in the middle of nowhere then, there are BJJ schools everywhere nowadays. If your med school is associated with an undergraduate school they often have sports clubs that involve grappling of some variety, be that judo, wrestling, jiu jitsu, etc. The instruction won't be the best but its a great way to get started for cheap.

Pick up guitar, or ukelele. User friendly instruments, you can pretty easily start learning songs, and playing instruments can feel like meditating....at least to me it does.

But honestly, I'd suggest building on a current interest you already have, rather than just do a random thing people recommended online. Think about the things you already enjoy and just build on it. It'll get you away and recharge you.

Also, you can always get into a workout routine, if you aren't already doing one.

Back when I had more time I liked going to the range. It's a great stress reliever for me, but it can get expensive and I end up spending too much time talking to the range officers and drooling over what they have for sale on the walls.

Now I just do P90X3 workout videos at home. It's the new(er) 30 minute series that is a lot more manageable than previous editions. Plus I need the exercise anyway. These past two years have done a number on the ventromedial area of my hypothalamus.

+1 for range/shooting.. Especially if you have access to an unpoliced outdoor shooting range. Something very relaxing about blowing up water bottles with a cheap Mosin at sunset, with critters singing all around.

I was going to suggest p90x or insanity. They're tough, but you can do them at home and go at your own pace without people staring. If you're somewhat athletic you can also do freerunning almost anywhere, but it requires a bit of coordination.

You can also try cooking. When I was in grad school I made it a point to try making a new recipe at least once a week, usually on weekends. Not everything turned out well, but I've got a couple of really solid go to recipes now for when I want to impress guests or friends. Plus if you bake stuff or make pizza dough you have to punch the dough or beat it, which can be a pretty solid way of taking some frustration out if you need to.

I'm in a relatively large city that just happens to have terrible roads and traffic. The nearest MMA gym is only 8 miles away, but that 8 miles is a 30-35 minute drive in normal traffic.

You could go on off times 3 times a week. If your city has a metro you can try to use that.

Disc golf is awesome. Very small investment (many courses have free discs, or you can buy one for like $8) and many courses don't even charge you to play. Its really fun and a great way to hang out with people where you don't have to spend a ton of money. You can even quiz each other if you want to get some studying done, or just kick back a beer and relax.

speaking of punching, wii boxing lets you make miis to box against and you can customize them to make them look like whomever you want, i used to make miis of people and professors i didnt like and POW POW POW POW

Note packets from awful lectures make the best paper targets.

No metro. I go to a regular gym 3-4 days a week right now. Have considered crossfit but the gym near here is way too expensive.

I'd strongly recommend avoiding many crossfit classes unless you're experienced with olympic weight lifting techniques. It's way too easy for someone not familiar with them to hurt themselves using a workout like crossfit.

Haha bro we don't even get note packets. The only way to get notes from lectures is to take screenshots and organize them yourself.

That sounds like a lot of work for paper targets. I guess you miss out on that level of catharsis.

I'm familiar with deadlifts and cleans, other than that nothing.

Have you looked at Groupon deals for crossfit? There usually seems to be deals on there for like the first month being really cheap.

What about dancing? You could try learning salsa, girls go crazy if you're good at salsa. You could also take up being a DJ

ugh sounds like LA

I'm a few months away from step 1 and I need something new to keep me sane. Any suggestions?

I have a hobby you may like, but it may cause blindness and/or hairy palms....

Aquarium keeping and archery seem very cool hobbies.
Archery is out of question. I live in a flat. I would probably be arrested.
