Hello. I am from Canada, and I got 18AT 20ST 20bio 20GC 20OC 16RC 16QR. Of course I am gonna retake DAT again, and I am doing SMP from this September at Barry. And, my GPA is about 2.7 (oh.. various and lots of volunteering!! more than 1000 hours)

If I get 22 on DAT and get a 3.8-3.9 on my SMP
Do you think Ill have a chance to get into any dentistry?

Plz give a concerned advice!

You must actually take the DAT again to really comment.

However, seeing that you're international, you may still have a tough time. Not to burst your bubble, but it seems like the majority of international applicants that matriculate have 3.7+ cGPA/sGPA and 24+ DAT scores.

That being said, given your projected situation, I still think you have a moderate chance of getting into dental school. It I were you, you would definitely try and aim for a 23+ AA/TS/PAT DAT score.

Best of luck!

Oh!! Thank you so much!!
I have one more question.. what other extracurricular activites do you think I need other than just volunteering?

Drawing, painting, sculpture... That is, if you are willing to put in some time and are interested in the topics 🙂

By the way, have you heard about Barry University SMP program?
I heard that is not too reputable among SMPs.. and I just wonder if that
gonna help me alot if I do good on it, such as 3.9ish..

I keep hearing as a Canadian applicant, you will be competing more so with other fellow canadian applicants rather than US applicants, perhaps because it's easier to compare the GPA. With that being said, a lot of Canadian applicants applying to US seem to have like 3.6+ GPA so I'm not sure how good your chances will be..............you'll definitely need to improve your DAT by a LOT first of all.

I have not heard of of the Barry SMP.

If it's not too refutable, then it will probably play a neutral role in helping your situation.

It will be good to boost GPA, but other than that it will likely be looked at as nothing very special. Boosting your GPA is important though, as it will put you past the first hurtle of computer GPA cutoffs.

Of course, if you get a 3.8-3.9 during your SMP at Barry, which I think is fine as a school or "reputable" and an option it seems a lot of pre-dents pursue, you will drastically increase your chances for acceptance. My question is why did you even take the DAT if your GPA was so low? That 2.7 is pretty much an automatic rejection. If I were you, I would focus more on getting your GPA up and studying hard for the DAT instead of focusing on EC's. It is probably not your EC's that wont get you into school but rather your very low GPA. Good luck!

Probably because he wants to get a grasp on where he stands in terms of DAT scores and plan afterwards.

Anyways, as a Canadian applicant myself, I definitely feel left out in the dark as to how adcom process our applications. I am worrying every day about my application :scared::scared::scared:

It really depends. International plus low overall gpa is tough to come by. Most international apps have a 3.5+ with high dat scores. If you really want to make a dent in you ogpa, you're going to have to take 18 or more units a semester which isn't that bad because at the same time, you show dental schools you can handle the load etc.

since SMP is 1 year intensive program with 36 credits, taking SMP at Barry definitely gonna help me right ?

As long as you do really well in it. Is it worth the money? Would it be a good idea to continue to load up on upper level bio courses as an undergrad to raise your GPA? What was your major?

It can only help...I was at a 3.18 at the end of my junior year but overloaded on units+summer school for 60 units and raised it to a 3.49. It's definitely doable. You should calculate the "what if" I get all A's in my classes and see what your GPA is. If you can pull it up reasonably by overloading/maxing out to something nice, GO for it. I'm sure with 36+ units, it will make a huge improvement and that can only help.

I was in general science which means I did not have a major. I spent like 6 years at the university to raise up my GPA. My first 3 year are bad.. but then my last 3 years are good

Maybe its time to move onto something like a graduate program or an SMP then. 6 years is quite awhile to be lingering around. So I take it you haven't graduated with anything yet?
