So I need some advice about setting up third year rotations in NYC. I plan to do a IM residency in NYC and want to get as much experience there as a I can. Given that it is 3rd year, I will already be doing 12 weeks of IM. I know it is a good idea to do an elective rotation at the hospital where you hope to do your residency. However, I am concerned about throwing in another 4-weeks of hospital-based IM into an already jam-packed 3rd year. There are other outpatient opportunities I have found in NYC just to get some connections/experience in NYC as well, but of course aren't at actual hospitals. Also, I haven't been able to find a housing in Manhattan that will take a student for 4 weeks.

So I guess my question is, do I suck it up and do another 4 weeks of IM in a NYC hospital or do I wait until my lighter 4th year where I could really shine on the rotation? When is the idea time to do a rotation at the hospital where you want to do a residency at? Keep in mind I will not be apply to the most competitive programs.

Thanks!

Wait until 4th year. The traditional time for "audition" rotations is the summer/early fall of 4th year. If you do an audition as a 3rd year, (a) you may not have enough experience to really do well and (b) no one will remember you well a year and a half later.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking too. I think it makes most sense to wait to do an audition rotation until you feel that you know enough to make a good impression. Now if I could only find housing in Manhattan for my away rotations...

Check with the hospital you're doing your rotation at. A lot of them, especially those that get a high number of visiting students, have available housing or inside information on nearby places with discounts, or even lists of residents who are willing to host a visiting student.
