Okay, I'm pretty determined and a straight A student. Due to some issues that I do not want to get into, I had to drop out of high school but received my GED at 16 and started working. I majored in Computer Science for a bit and even worked in the feild from age 16 to 20 that I wasn't too thrilled about, despite the great opportunity, to be honest. I then started licensure courses for phlebotomy to make extra money. Well, my career path completely changed after that and I knew that I wanted to be in the health care field. I work as a phlebotomist currently and also major in Biology at my local community college. I plan on transferring to the University of Florida after receiving my AA and going from there. I'm worried that my past will be looked apon poorly, despite my current academic record. I did well in school (honor roll, honor classes, etc) up until the year I had to drop out (again, dealing with those issues). I was just wondering if that will matter? How much will it matter? What should I do to sort of "make up" for what I'm lacking? I have a fairly reasonable outline but I'd like the opinion of someone who is more knowledgeable/experienced than I.

No problem here. You are a classic American success story if you continue your upward trend from being a high-school dropout: your personal statement will write itself. Very little about your high school years, if anything, is asked for on med school apps.

Get into a 4yr school as soon as you can. Continue to get great grades. By great, I mean stellar. By stellar, I mean ridiculously great. GREAT GRADES.

IMHO, after you have a successful first term at the 4 year school, THEN you can think about taking on extra-curriculars.

Go get 'em. Best of luck to you.

Just like Dr. Midlife says, you're a straight A student, and that was high school.

I myself grauduated from an adult education due to dropping out of my high school (I moved a lot and didn't have enough credits to graduate). I wanted to pursue cosmetology, and I also didn't bother taking the ACT/SAT.

I think all it really takes is motivation and positive work; you'll be able to achieve the goal you see. The road just may be bumpier for some, but don't give up! I don't see a GED as anything bad. You've got experience as a phlebotomist now, so that's great. 🙂
