I have recently decided that I want to attend PT school in fall of 2013. I was wondering if anyone could comment on my stats as I have sort of been out of the "game" for a bit and I am not sure where I stand amongst a pool of applicants. Any other additional information is welcomed as well!

University: Boston University
Major: Nutritional Sciences
Overall GPA: 3.62
GRE: V: 580 Q: 710 Total: 1290

Extra curric: Soccer coach, lab instructor, baker, lifeguard, travel, perform nutritional analysis in inpatient setting, + more

Observation hours: 100+ in outpatient orthopedic setting

My plan is to apply to University of Miami, Nova, and Florida International University (FIU), but I have no clue with my stats if I've even got a shot!

I think your stats put you in the upper category of applicants .. I got in to 3 schools with a 3.6 and 1130 GRE .. I believe with a decent interview you should get into every school you apply

Your stats look good except for your observation hours. Some schools require that you have 3+ settings, with at least one being in-patient. Just about everyone has outpatient ortho.

Everything looks fantastic except observation hours. Look for another 100+ hours in other settings. Check your local SNFs, ALHs, and hospitals for in-patient rehab and sub-acute care.

how long have you "been out of the game"?? Depending on how long you have been out you might have to retake your GRE as well as getting more observation hours. I know some universities will have you redo new observation hours every year. This way you dont have applicants that have observation hours back from 2000, for example, and are using them on their application. When did you graduate from Boston University??

I forgot to mention, you might want to start looking into in-patient settings ASAP. In-patient is not always easy to get, and you may be put on a waiting list for a hospital (especially during the summer where a lot of students like yourself are trying to get hours).

Thank you everyone for the advice! I haven't been out of school for long at all..I graduated from BU last December. I just have been out of the PT realm because I was a nutrition student and only recently made the choice to switch to PT for graduate school. I just don't know what to expect and usually I would obtain that information from a guidance counselor, but I'm already out of school and don't have that as a resource anymore!

I will work on observation hours ASAP. I am hoping that my experience working in inpatient (hospital in Boston) performing nutritional analysis will help show that I am familiar with other settings even if it wasn't necessarily in PT.

Thanks again!

DPTHopeful921, what else did you do to make your application "stand-out" since your stats aren't exactly high, I'd say they were pretty average. I'm only a junior in undergrad and I have a 3.75 as an Exercise Science major as of right now and I have yet to take the GRE (I'll be taking the new one soon). What be be your advice, or anyone who would like to contribute, to bolster my applications.

Thanks a bunch!
