I am currently majoring in both Psychology and Addiction Studies, but I am very interested in changing my major to Biology/Pre-Medicine with a minor in Psychology. My interests were to attend graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and to specialize in addiction disorders. After much research, I feel as though my time would be better spent pursuing Psychiatry in which I discovered addiction can be a sub-specialty. In short, this would keep me from having to take two years of post-doctorate Psychopharmacology, I would have more prescribing liberties, I would still get to specialize in addiction, and there would be more emphasis on psychotherapy, etc. This is something I really would like to do.

My concern and need for advice is this, my transcript shows where I claimed academic bankruptcy when I returned to school in 2013. The bankruptcy was for the semesters I attended between 2005 and 2007. Also, the spring semester of 2014 I had some family issues and I did not withdraw from most of my classes in time which resulted in my failing that semester. I returned the following semester and retook the same classes and finished with a 3.7 GPA for that semester, which I feel shows that it was not my inability to make the grades, but personal issues. I am concerned that even if I change my major, work hard, and get excellent grades that these discrepancies will keep me from getting into Medical School since it is highly competitive. I would hate to take this road and regret it. Do you know, or is there a way to know, if this being on my transcript is a good reason to stay where I am at, majoring in Psychology? I have spent hours and hours researching every facet of this decision and this is the only thing left that I think could be a problem. If you can offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

AMCAS does not recognize "bankruptcy."
You will have to report all post high school grades.
So I take it that it won't be separated, it will all be on my official transcript. Do you think that three years of solid good grades, ending with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and scoring high on the MCAT will be enough to make up for these discrepancies?

At many schools, with an otherwise substantive application, it will work at many schools.

Thank you guys for the advice. Perhaps, I should keep Psychology and Addiction Studies as my major and also take the Science prerequisites for med school so I can go either way.
