My daughter just got accepted into Stanford. We're very excited; however, the award letter set our "family responsibility" at $60K per year. She was also accepted by Washington University in St. Louis with a merit scholarship covering full tuition for all four years of undergraduate studies.

My daughter seems to be interested in chemistry, medical research, and public health. After college, she would be interested in either medical school or a science related graduate program. We are a middle class family and have saved less than half of the cost of Stanford.

She likes both schools and locations, although Stanford is her dream school.

Any advice for us? Please help!

Go to WUSTL and don't look back. No doors will be closed on her coming out of Wash U. If she wants to go to med school afterwards she should be trying to minimize her debt coming out of undergrad.

Unless Stanford gives her a huge financial aid packet then the choice is already made, Washington University is for your daughter.

WUSTL.

The AAMC says that as of 2010, the average debt carried by a newly-minted MD was about $158k, inclusive of undergrad debt (source pdf here). Sounds like Stanford alone would cost you guys $240k over the next four years, and that's just for her bachelor's degree.

imho wustl is better than stanford if she is looking for something medical. and free tuition? lolololol now you know you didn't even need to make this thread.

I agree free tuition >>>>>> debt... Go with Wash...

Also, a 3.5 from stanford doesn't open any extra doors, if she could get higher grades at Wash she's better off for med school. I have a friend with a 3.6 from berkeley, didn't mean crap when she applied to med school, it was still a 3.6...
