Hey guys, I'm currently done with 1 year of premed (31 credits) but I messed up my GPA (2.2). I was recently accepted to a 6 year med program abroad and was thinking if I should go. I know if I go that would make me an IMG and would put me at a disadvantage during matching. Should I work on my GPA and apply to DO's instead?

If you only have 31 college semester hours so far, with a year of straight A grades you could get to a 3.1, with two years a 3.4, and at graduation a 3.55. Though adding a fifth college year would be even better, with a high MCAT score and strong sGPA, you could still be a viable US MD candidate. With retakes you'd be in very good shape for DO med schools. If you want to ultimately practice in the USA, you are far better off staying in the US to complete undergrad.

Yeah, all you've really done in your first year is set your self up for a good talking point about maturity and personal growth. But of course you can only put that to good use if you bust your ass in the next 3-4 years. I wouldn't go overseas if you want to eventually practice medicine in the US.

I'd stay away from going IMG unless you absolutely have to. I'd plan on working harder, maybe doing a post-bac, and trying for DO/MD.
