It's been awhile since I've been on here... I really need advice... My plan has been to take the mcat in June and apply to DO school this summer... I am 27 a fulltime RN in the hospital I have two daughters 10 and 3.. I'm getting married in May... Well I am taking orgo 2 and physics 2... I finished orgo1 and physics 1 in the fall with A's.. My GPA is bad because when I first started college when I was 18 I hs a 2 yr old and worked multiple jobs and couldn't handle it.. Well now my fiancé lost his job in January and we are out about $4000 a month so I've been working extra 12hr shifts overnight.. I can't handle working this much and school i just can't put the time in there is not enough time in the day.. I literally don't sleep... I am losing a ton of weight.. I am also not studying as much for the mcat now either... Should I withdrawl from my classes and retake them in the fall and then take a prep course next spring and take my mcat in June 2016?? With working so much and the kids and the wedding im so overwhelmed... We had a nice nest egg in the bank so when I got into medical school I only had to work per diem if need be but we are blowing through that especially with the wedding being 3 months away.. Any and all advice would be great.. Thanks guys...

Just a little more on me... I've been a nurse for a little over 6 years... Every summer I host a back pack drive and donate to needy families, Every year on my oldests bday All the toys she gets she donated to local children's hospitals; we are currently working on a prom dress/ accessories collection for the unfortunate so they can have a nice prom without spending money; currently working on collection shoes tee shirts and bottled water for the summer for the homeless near me; in the president of the science club at the clear I attend; we done research on breast milk and uv light (not many hours); I work with drs hand in hand everyday not sure if I should actually shadow.. Overall GPA with not retaking asses is approx 3.13 science is approx 3.68

I think you answered your own question. I would not risk further damage to the gpa.

If you think that you are going to do better taking them in the fall then by all means , a prep course is a great idea in my modest opinion .

I am just wondering , how are you going to handle medical school with all these responsibilities on your shoulders ? You might want to think about that before getting into medical school .
Just my 2 cents

Good luck to you

I did think about how I would handle all of this in medical school. I think it would be hard.. I didn't expect my fiancé after 12 yrs of working at the same place to lose his job because the business closed.. We have been saving so I didn't have to work as much while in medical school.. Thank goodness the wedding will be over with by the time I'm applying to med school... I had a baby at 16 and managed to support myself and her and get myself through RN school which was really hard.. Cardiologyfan maybe I can't do it... Maybe I wouldn't be able to... But that doesn't mean I wouldn't put 100 % into trying.. If I get into medical school im all in... I'd have to do whatever it takes to do well and pass..

Also something to keep in mind, is if you are dedicated and know you won't drop out, you can plan on having that earning potential. There is a reason people leave med school with mounds of student debt. Sometimes it's worth not working and just being dedicated to school. Once your accepted into med is one of those times

I'm a 4th year at an allopathic school in the northeast and I can tell you that plenty of people in my class had kids prior to school or started their families during school, and one of my classmates has continued working as a paramedic throughout the last 4 years. It sounds like you are a dedicated and very hard worker so once you are in I am sure that you will find a way to succeed. Honestly, the hardest part of med school is getting in, so I would say do whatever you need to do to get your academic / financial / family ducks in a row. I think your application is very solid and your clinical experience is way more impressive than any amount of physician shadowing in my opinion. As for your GPA, the fact that you are a nurse demonstrates a very deep understanding of medical science and your science GPA of 3.68 is solid. Obviously, I am not on an admission committee but I would assume the more real world experience you have (especially relevant experience like yours) the less your GPA matters so my question is do you even need to continue taking courses? If you can handle studying for the MCAT now, possibly assisted by dropping classes / volunteer activities to alleviate some of your stress then I think you have a really good chance of getting into any medical school, allopathic or osteopathic.

Best of luck!

I agree with @IMdoc2015 that if your DO school of choice doesn't require orgo 2 or physics 2 that you should drop them. Another option is to take the MCAT and apply this summer with the plan to take them in the fall during your application cycle. Lots of students are finishing classes during their application year. Decreasing your volunteer hours will help your stress significantly. You can pick them back up after the wedding and after your fiancé gets another job.

I am in school and have 6 kids and a great husband. For personal reasons I can't take out all of the loan money most students can, but with my husband working we are making it. There are people in my class who are married with a stay at home spouse, and they are living on loan money. I'm working 1-3 days a month between military drill time and occasional work as a physician assistant.

You can definitely do this, but not if you're sick from overworking yourself now. You've been through enough that if you do have to postpone a year, you know it's not the end of the world.

Take care of yourself!

I like your attitude and I wish you the very best , if you can keep this level of determination you can definitly reach your goal in med school .
Just make sure that the process wont be overwhelming for you in the future .
Your husband should give you the support that you'll need to achieve well in med school .

Good luck

Med school is hard, and you cannot work during your schooling. Maybe during rotations you could squeeze something in, but not during the first 2 years. Does your fiance not have any prospects for new jobs?? You have two choices: fail/withdraw-from your classes or decrease the work and take on more debt. You have to decide. Either way, it is your decision to make for your circumstances. I know people in school who have families, and it is certainly possible. I am considerably older than you, and you have time to do this... don't be in a rush to get somewhere at the expense of getting there safely... all of the med schools aren't going to suddenly close, but if you screw it all up now, you may not finish your dream...

Family comes first. You're in no position to maintain academic excellence (which you need) and providing for the family. You still have plenty of time for this process. It's a marathon, not a spring.
