Need advice

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am frustrated by this post. Pathology and pediatrics are utterly different. Why would you want to choose a field in medicine that is utterly different than the one you intended to study just to get a residency in the US? You have worked hard enough to go through a top European medical school and in your rotations discovered you liked Pediatrics. You then studied and took all the USMLEs. Do you want to be a doctor in America at any cost or are you trying to do what you apparently love.... pediatrics? Why apply to a field that is completely different from pediatrics with minimal patient contact just because there are positions available due to crappy management? The fundamental question you need to ask yourself is “Do I want to be a physician in the US at any cost?” I would not do pathology in the US just because there are spots available and “grow to love it.” Why do you care about opinions on this site? You have become a physician. Can’t you after all the hard work and sacrifice make this fundamental decision on your own without posting to a site like this?

I didn't read your entire post. You can match in Pathology if you want to...no problem...somewhere. If you have a pathology background, know how to gross you will get in somewhere. Your scores are fine for path.

Program directors swoon for people who have a path background. They are already ahead of the game. Who would you rather hire someone who knows nothing needs to be taught or someone who is ready to hit the ground running grossing like a rockstar and previewing cases like a junior attending lol.

Best of luck to you. Path isn't hard to get into.

That's why the number of US grads applying to pathology is decreasing. It's not a competitive field...it's not sexy like other fields. People who have been out of medical school 10 years doing who knows what can get in.

I know I'm being negative and I hate to add to the negativity on this forum but it's true.

i understand your point of view! Thank you for the reply.

Spend a month in the pathology program. most likely there will be an unexpected opening and you will get the job. Have seen it happen many times!
