Hi,

Im a US citizen about to finish up High School in my country of origin: Pakistan. I plan on doing medical with my penultimate goal working as a doctor in America. I have two options. Either apply for Pakistani Colleges or apply for Universities in America.The first question is that I didnt take math in A levels, only Physics Chemistry and Biology, so does that makes me ineligible to apply for American Universities for premed? Secondly would it be better to do medical in pakistan or USA? Money is not a factor. Thanks in advance.

1st: I believe you meant "ultimate" goal, unless you have a goal beyond being a doctor in the US.

2nd: Can't really comment on applying to US colleges, but as far as I remember, I believe that you need math. You can look at individual college's sites that' you'd consider with their requirements for foreign high school grads.

3rd: If you want to practice in the US, then do med school in the US. It's going to be more difficult as the number of US allopathic spots are increased and residency spots are not.

I don't know what non-"A-level " math entails, but US universities have entering students with differing math backgrounds and generally have remedial math programs available to get you up to speed, like College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. You'll have to read the websites of each school to determine their requirements for application.

To qualify for consideration in the application process, US med schools have variable requirements for the number of credits you must obtain from US accredited colleges. This varies from 30-90 credits, but all of them want you to take the prerequisites in the US. So if you want to go to a US med school, you would be better off going to college in the US.

Another way to become a physician licensed to practice in the US is to complete your college and med school education in Pakistan, take and do very well on all three USMLEs (licensing exams), and apply for a residency program in your specialty of choice as a foriegn medical graduate. Statistically your chances of matching into a residency program as a US med school grad are nearly 50% higher.

Basically agree with everyone here. Get into a US university. You cannot apply to medical school with a foreign degree. Getting into a US residency is much, much harder as a foreign medical school graduate, and many specialties could be impossible to get into. If you want to practice in the US, come on over and train here.
