Hello guys,
I have a situation that I would like to share with you guys and get some advice. I was released from an IM residency program after completing 7 month with above average evaluations. What happened was I got off on the wrong track with some of my senior residents and two of them stated under the ethical section that I have said that I have done certain things when I havent such as ordering labs/consults..etc...which I might have unintentionally a couple of times but nothing that has lead to any serious comprmise to patient care or anything of the like. So I was taken to a departmental meeting where the chair of the department has made the decession to release me from the program even after I presented my case. During this whole time I had a great reltionship with the PD. After, they made that decission I left and started an MPH program for the past year. Now I will be re-applying for residency again this year. I havent talked to the PD since the department chair made that decisson. I recently have scheduled an appointment to go back and talk with the PD to ask for his support as I am going to reapply for residency. He seemed pretty positive about setting a meeting. My questions to you guys is : What should I address during the meeting? Should I ask him for a letter of rec? Is it possible for me to get credit for those seven month? My medical school program director said that she could offer me a second year spot if I have credit for those month? Is it ok to ask the program director if I can get credit for those month or should I just keep it simple and just ask for his support as I reapply for residency. I also have two letters of recommendation from my attendings their.

I am curious if when you were released, if they told you at that time if you will get credit. I think you have to be honest and put everything in the table. Ask the program director what is the best way for you to finish your education, which is expensive and you have sacrifized a lot. I will ask for the credit and the letter of recommendation. You have to use all the cards in this game.
 
I may be wrong here, but I don't think it's up to either your old program or your new one as to whether you get credit, I think it's up to the ABIM, whom you have to petition for credit. Anyone with more insider info than I have?

I actually think it's up to the program accepting you whether they will give you credit for completed months. ABIM only plays into it wrt required/acceptable rotations toward certification.

To the OP, your only goal in the meeting with your former PD is to get a letter stating that you left the program in good academic standing as without that, you're better off saving your ERAS fees next year and just scoring a job at Starbucks now.

If you manage to get a new PGY1 position, after you start and prove yourself (for a minimum of 6 months, preferably after successfully completing your intern year and being offered a PGY2 contract), then and only then, should you ask about getting credit for "time served" in your previous internship.

Gutonc is correct. A PD -- either your old one or your new one -- would need to request credit for your prior training from the ABIM. There is some chance that your prior PD did give you credit, or perhaps not. Theoretically he/she should have told you this as part of your termination. Whether a PD is willing to do this depends on many factors, and whether they would do it before you start (vs after you have proven yourself) is also their call. Even if the do give you credit, they could require you to complete 12 months of additional PGY-1 time.

The thing to focus on is getting into a new program. Whether you save 6-7 months by getting prior credit should be very low on your list of priorities at the moment.

For a progdirector,
I am not really concerned for the credit per say. But getting credit says that I wasnt a horrible resident and improves my chance of getting another residency. I honestly dont mind repeating my intern year but having credit says that I did ok and sheds positive light on the situation. Am I correct...I would be happy to get more advice..let me know
