I am pretty screwed because my application is not strong at all right now and need some good serious advice on how I should advace if I want to get into medical school.

Here are the stats:

GPA 2.995 (yeah I know, so close!)

EC: Worked at a software security company for the last 6 years but since it was located 2 hours away from my school, I did not do much else other than attended classes. Last spring I volunteered in the Neurological Clinic at the Sacramento Hospital and shadowed a doctor. I also held two other jobs at my JC but they are also not health related.

I'm taking the MCAT in July.

Tomorrow I am going to the career center at school to see what kind of volunteer work and research I can get into. Some people tell me this will help a lot and others say don't bother.

What can/should I do to get into medical school? I am not very confident I will get in this cycle but want to make sure I can get in next time around.

I would really appreciate some sound advice.

Thank you,

Joey

are you sill in JC right now?

-Kill the MCAT like it's bin laden.
-Volunteer in a hospital
-volunteer w/ patient contact
-get your gpa up because a 3.0 isn't going to get you anywhere besides a Caribbean school
-get good LOR's
-keep shadowing the doctor
-take a GPA boosting semester

what's your major?

-articulate why you want to be a doctor and turn it into a fantastic PS
-if you have time..... do some research
-the software security company looks good, especially the longevity of it (but what were your responsibilities?)

The best advice that I can give you is to tell you not to apply this year. You will get rejected by every school to which you apply. You clinical exposure is weak and your gpa is a total loser.

You need to spend about two years improving your application. You probably will need a postbac to boost your gpa and you will need alot more clinical exposure and volunteer work. Research would be helpful.

Do not waste your time applying now because you are doomed. Make the necessary improvements to give yourself a chance. If you apply this cycle, you will be a reject and it will be much more difficult for you as a reapplicant down the road.

You are wasting your money and damaging your future chances by applying now.

I actually graduated from UC Davis this December with a Biological Sciences degree.

I am tending to agree that it seems doomed for me. I am still going to take the MCAT and try to kick its ass and hopefully by next year I can have enough ECs and maybe even a bit of a boosted GPA to get in.

I was going to ask for my LOR this month, should I still do so if I don't apply this cycle?

Thanks for the input.
