Good morning SDN'ers!
I am looking for some comments from those who are pursuing admission into or have gained admission into UT-Memphis. I am a 34 year old fella applying to dental school for the 2006 cycle. My wife and I currently live in Marietta, GA but my wife is from TN and would not mind being closer to her mom when we start having some little ones running around.
Well, I called UT-Memphis yesterday to ask a few questions and to get some information mailed to me. Please forgive me because I totally forgot the man's name that I spoke with primarily because I was a little shocked by his attitude. I called and said "good morning" and asked if I could get an application and any other information that I would need to pursue admission for the 2006 cycle. He asked where I lived and I answered "Atlanta" and he was basically like "don't bother". Honestly, I can understand him being honest about my chances being an out-of-stater, but he really took the wind out of my sails. He explained that for an out-of-stater that they basically only accept 8 folks that are not from TN or Arkansas. For me, he explained I would need a "very high science GPA". I responded, "Great, I have a 3.8 and am currently employed in the Public Health arena." Then I explained I was a non-traditional student since I was older. He said with a VERY harsh tone that I was NOT non-traditional and that would be considered discriminating. He basically began to argue that just going back to school to get pre-reqs did not entitle me to being called non-traditional.
Honestly folks, I was TOTALLY taken back by my first interaction with this man. I do not know if I caught him at a very bad time or if he had a million other things on his mind. I did try to explain my reasons for choosing UT and how I was looking to get to a more rural area to practice (sick of the traffic in the ATL!).
I am still going to apply to UT because I am HIGHLY interested in attending there. But, after my initial interaction with UT, I feel kind of down about it. It was VERY discouraging especially since all of the other dental schools I have spoken with have been so helpful and enthusiastic.
I really just wanted to get some feedback from all the UT folks and if maybe this guy is just there to weed out those who are not serious or what. Are all of the other staff this much of a deadbeat?
Looking forward to the responses and thanks a million in advance for your thoughts.
