Hi, i'm a 17 student currently doing my A-levels in the UK, one of which is Psychology. I am hoping in the future to follow the career of psychotherapy. I would be really happy with this career as it provides me a chance to really help people, and be able to live a financially-stable life (hopefully)

So obviously, I need the right choices to get me there, and this is why I joined these forums - in hope to get some advice!

I'm currently looking at the following courses at Derby University:
Under-Graduate: BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling Studies
Post-Graduate: Doctorate of Psychotherapy (Cognitive Behavioural)

Is this a good choice to make for my plans? Will it qualify me to be a psycotherapist? What opportunities will these courses open to me in the future?

Any insight or advice would be massively appreciated!
Thanks.
Pete

I'm an American studying in the UK now, and although I don't know a whole lot about the differences, I know there are some between the States and the UK in clinical psychology. My only advice would just be to make sure that your degree would make you eligible to practice where you want to if, say, you want to move to the US or something like that.

if i am not mistaken in the us i believe you must be a M.D. first then take psychiatric classes afterwards in order to fully specialize in psychotherapy, escpecially if you want to use it as your main stay approach to treating mental illness.
Just a thought i could be wrong.

There are lots of ways to be a "therapist," ranging from getting a MA to a PhD to an MD to an MSW to taking a certificate course. The type of therapy work you want to do, the sort of population you want to work with, how long you want to be in school, and how much money you have to blow are all factorsin deciding between them.

Sounds like a plan to me! Try to get hooked up with a prof early in your undergrad. You should try to do some research in your undergrad if you want grad school to be free. Even if you don't like research, you might be able to find someone who does work on psychotherapy process, therapy outcomes, or effects of rapport.

Were you looking at doing your undergrad and grad work at the same school? Is that common in the UK? I'd really really advise against that; moving can expose you to new opportunities and ideas.
