So during my junior year i got a c in orgo 1 then a C+ in orgo 2, basically the first grade was due to just laziness the 2nd grade was due to me jsut being lazy in lab (about the same thing - altho i got an A for the class and a D in the lab, in my school they put them together to give you one grade). Anyway now I'm applying to med school and on some apps they have the question explain fluctuations in any of the grades etc.. What can I put?

I really don't want to put I was just lazy or I hate lab as I don't think either response would be too appropriate - does anyone have any ideas, other then those 2 grades btw I have all A's one or 2 A-'s and another 1 or 2 B+'s

Any help would be appreciated!

IMO it is better to take responsibility than to sound like a little girl and blaming everyone else.. Also we all screw up and we move on

I would prefer you not get into medical school so, when I get you as a lab partner, I don't have to explain myself when you try and sluff off responsibility onto me for something that didn't go as planned.

Be a man, take responsibility.

Amen

I agree with most of the posts and not make any excuses. I would just say it was a really hard class and you worked hard but that is the grade you got.

If you are not applying this cycle, i would consider retaking it

i'm sorry if i came of as trying to not take responsibility for my actions - i know i am fully responsible and am not makign excuses, i jsut wanted to know everyone's opinion on how to handle it

my bad for wording it improperly

i am applying this cycle

i just didn't know if writing i was an idiot and didn't take lab seriously will endear med schools to accepting me so asked for advice

thanx for the answers tho

No need to be so harsh guys..

No offense, actually nevermind, please take offense to this comment.

You asked us what kind of excuses you could use to "get out of" a bad grade. Guess what, you can't get out of a bad grade in orgo I by doing poorly in orgo II. It doesn't work that way. Your chance to have an excuse was doing well in orgo II and blaming your orgo I grade on poor study habits. I truly feel sorry for any lab/study partners you have.

I do not feel that it is appropriate to ask these types of questions. It's like asking someone to write your personal statement. It's dishonest and says volumes about your character.

Furthermore, you clearly lied in your last post. There was no faulty wording in your original post. You were clear about your intentions multiple times. If your wording is that bad, then I also pity for anyone you had a group writing assignment with.

If I am totally off base with this, then I'm sorry. However, I really don't think I am.

Don't make illegitimate excuses on your applications. It's dishonest. Either say the truth or don't comment.

I'd love to read your ethical dilemma essays.

Tell the truth, but soften it. Say you had difficulty prioritizing your time or something. But seriously, Cs 2 semesters in a row? That will be tricky to explain under any circumstances, and is really pretty irresponsible (no offense). My first question as an adcom member would be, "why the heck didn't he learn his lesson the first time and actually do the work?"

Kind of difficult since it was junior year
(at least reasonable if it was freshman/sophomore year)

If it comes up in an interview you're probably better off saying you got an A in the class and the lab dragged you down (as you say it did)

class >>>> lab IMO
ugh
chemistry labs 🙄

hey i havent applied to med school yet but i have had to face my irresponsibilities head on in my work life and at home (probably everyone has) but making excuses only comes to bite u back in the butt.

the downside tho to being really honest is that in the end, adcoms are going to be looking at those two C's in a row. hopefully, when you interview, you can fully explain this situation in the best way you can.

ok w/e you guys are obv not listening - I came here asking for advice on what to tell admissions not to argue, if it's the truth (aka saying I was lazy) then you could've just said that instead of acting like jerks and bashing me for no reason, at the same time I'm sure there are better ways to phrase this then just saying oh ye I was immature and lazy back when I was a sophmore - so that's what I was asking, if there's not just say that nicely no need to start writing that I'm a cheater a terrible partner etc, I've actually taken chem lab since again then and got A+

all i wanted some advice for anyone who had known some1 in this situation or some1 who had been in a similar situation

Although I share the same sentiments as others in this thread, I'll try and be more helpful.

As someone said before, take full responsibility, but soften it a bit. You being lazy can become you having difficulty prioritizing.

But still...two Cs in a row dude? I'd actually recommend retaking so that way you can show med schools you got your **** together at least.

Yea.. you kind of contradict your self.

Umm yea dude, I would just man up if I were you.
But if I were writting a movie plot for a dude in your situation, I would have the dude say his parents were going through a divorce and that took a toll both emotionally and physically ( idk).
😉

Blame it on the goose, gotcha feeling loose
Blame it on the 'tron, gotcha panties off
Blame it on the ah-ah-ah-alcohol, blame it on the ah-ah-ah-alcohol
Blame it on the vodka, blame it on the henny
Blame it on the blue tap got you feeling dizzy
Blame it on the ah-ah-ah-alcohol, blame it on the ah-ah ah-ah ah-al-co-hol

On a serious note, just be truthful. Lies always bite you in the a** and honesty is always the best answer.

They're right. You can't hide behind your essay forever and if your posts are any indication, you're not a very consistent liar... Still, best of luck. I hope you have learned from your mistake and are able to effectively communicate that at interview time.

What was the title of this thread??

You = fail

clearly you can see that asking people directly on SDN isn't the best way to get good results, because you just get flamed by people who think they're better than you

you can find answers by utilizing SDN in other ways, like the search function

but realize that you cannot get rid of the impact of bad grades. they are a blemish that cannot be erased.

😕 I understand it is SDN policy to not directly attack another member. So.......................your avatar sucks 👍

I'm pretty sure mine qualifies as especially awesome. 3D 4-point star designed by me o.o

OP, seriously. Excuses deflect blame from yourself. No one's going to give you an excuse if 4 years down the road you decide to use one to explain why you didn't ask for blood work done because you were lazy. You need to figure out WHY you were lazy. Lack of motivation, lack of effort, overwhelmed by life, imbalanced, etc.
