Listed as a pre-req, but can be waived if instructor approves. Am taking Genetics this semester. Wondering if it would be stupid to take Micro at the same time, or if one can get by with a basic knowledge of genetics (while concurrently taking genetics) and a good o-chem knowledge.

Know every course is different, would just like some general opinions.

Thanks,

I took Micro without Genetics, didn't have a problem. There's some basic microbial genetics in the course but you can easily read up on it on your own.

I had micro before both genetics and ochem. Got an A no problem. You'll be just fine.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I value your opinions.

You don't need to know how to do any genetics calculations in order to do Micro. At the most, things about transduction, conjugation/Hfr, transformation, and transposons will come in handy...You'll learn about all that over again in Micro though, so its no big deal. Also, I had that stuff even before genetics, so it was yet again another review.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It would help, but isn't necessary. Take it from me (liscensed microbiologist with 3 years of practice and current med student). You should have the concepts that come with basic biology. Know the difference between Viral, Prokaryotic, and Eukaryotic Nucleic acids. Know about plasmids, transformation, and translation. Other than that, just make sure you have basic biology and Ochem. Biochem would help.
