I graduated in 2009 with a BS in engineering. If I exclude the engineering classes my UG GPA is 3.56 overall, 3.52 BCPM. With post-bacc classes (taken at CC) overall GPA is 3.67, BCPM is 3.63. Unfortunately my BCPM GPA first semester freshman year was quite low (3.07). Is this a show stopper? Would I benefit from doing a single year masters program in biology? Appreciate any advice.

It is completely possible to gain acceptance based on your current numbers. What was your gpa for the past 60 - 30 credits? Your mcat and state of residence will matter if it is MD vs DO tho.

I have not yet taken the MCAT. State of residence is Louisiana

thanks. My gpa improved steadily during undergrad so last 60 hrs were above 3.6. I haven’t taken the MCAT yet. Will be applying in Louisiana and TX.

1) Is this a show stopper?
2) Would I benefit from doing a single year masters program in biology? Appreciate any advice.
1) A steep upward grade trend since freshman year with application GPAs in the ballpark for average matriculants (3.71/3.64) will not hold you back.

2) A traditional masters program will not add to your med school candidacy at the vast majority of MD med schools, even if it's in a hard science.

Is this a show stopper?
Nope

Would I benefit from doing a single year masters program in biology?
You can, but I don't think it's needed. Save it for a failed app cycle
Thank you all for the advice!
