Need help choosing an intern elective

I have one (yes . . . one) elective month as an intern and I don't want to blow it. I can pretty much do anything. My clinical interests lie in neuro-onc but I'm sure that I'll get a lot of that exposure in my RadOnc residency.

So, for the residents on this board . . .

What would be useful? Maybe CT Abdominal radiology? Dosimetry? Any ideas?

I did a two week surgical path elective during intern year and really enjoyed it. It allows you pretty good hours, and gives you some useful education that can be applied down the road. A surgical sub-specialty elective (i.e. ENT, Uro, NSG, Thoracic) is also very educational for a rad onc resident, but I don't necessarily advocate doing it during intern year, probably better to make it an elective during rad onc residency if you are able.

Neuro anatomy would be a great elective...learning CT/MRI with respect to neuro/h&n anatomy. you could also spend a week or 2 in body ct, which would be useful as well. another elective you may want to consider is working with a breast surgeon in an outpatient setting. you may see FNA's, u/s guided biopsies, and discuss the treatment of breast ca from a surgeon's perspective. lastly, medonc or neuroonc may be of interest to you as well.

you dont need to do a radonc elective (clinical or physics related) because you will see much of that as a resident over the 4 years.

dosimetry would be useful if you can get it. any imaging would. but i agree pick something you'd enjoy.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I will throw out some feelers to various PDs to see if they will sponsor me for my elective month.
